Best way to get more volume from OE exhaust?

Been reading tons of threads on exhausts, but havent see one that answers how to get more volume out of the stock exhaust WITHOUT changing its tone or timbre.

Midpipes change the characteristics of the tone, making it deeper. I absolutely hate drone, so not going to remove the secondary cats. AA/ER midpipes are out.
Does removing the resonator accomplish this? Does anyone have a clip of the dinan pipe that removes the resonator with the stock axleback?

Ideas are welcomed.

Thanks

Sounds like res delete is what you’re after. Heard it makes only a subtle difference in volume, but pair it with a valve controller, and you might be happy. Check the FB group for videos, seen a few there.

I went resonated AA midpipe, don’t notice any drone and
It’s significantly louder, without much change in tone, it sounds better than before for sure.

You could install an after market Valve Controller. this will open up the exhaust flaps even more thus allowing more of the noise / sound you are after without altering your OEM exhaust.

The valves are suprisingly active. You'll realize that if you get a valve controller. I just use BimmerLink for mine (leave the wireless dongle connected under the dash) and open the valves on my phone. I have the AA non-res midpipe and at 2k rpm there is a little bit of drone. With valves shut the drone is gone. I personally like it and find the sound soothing.

Most people on the boards who have gone with the Dinan res-delete have been disappointed. However, if you're really after just a subtle increase in volume you may like it.

Side note: if able, lower your rear seats. I lowered mine the other day to pick up some cargo and the exhaust was significantly louder. Might not make much difference with stock exhaust but it's free so worth a shot.

I'll be doing valve controller for now and eventually AA resonated mid pipe.

does the exhaust button by the gear lever open up flaps all the way at all rpm? or a valve controller is required to have it either open or closed?

Even with the exhaust button, there is some funny stuff going on in the different drive modes that still prevent the flaps from being 100% open. In sport + you will notice it being the loudest but from what I understand it is still not always 100% open. A valve controller is the only way to ensure it is 100% open or closed.

interesting, I have been looking for threads on the dinan pipe, but havent seen someone complain about it. Videos of course dont really reflect the real impact of that mod.

From what Ive read, it only opens them partially. On WOT they're open half way so there's still some restriction. Again, going from what I've read, maybe I'm wrong.

I think it does go full open, but it is at a certain point of WOT. I understood its more of a progressive opening

Thanks for all the info everyone. I'll look into getting the valve controllers, or jamming them open just to test how much it helps.

I was thinking about going with the x-pipe but like stated, some reviews people have said it barely even made a noticeable difference. The x-pipe is still 500$ and not as reversible if you want to go back to stock. It made more sense to me to go with a full midpipe.

I think I found my answer

It definitely looks like the OE exhaust, I think i'll spring for the x-pipe.

Thanks again for the feedback

Don't get an x pipe, also the guy in the video didn't even let the car at idle rpm he reved it cold. I have a resonator delete costed me $80, went the best edxhaust shop in my area had the nicest weld replaced with 2 straight pipes. You can ask for an H, or an X. The sound is louder, the burbles are 20% louder and the upshift farts are 40% louder. Saves you money too.

Never thought about this. Any issues with drone/resonating frequencies/raspiness/etc? So you just cut the resonator and extended the pipes from the dual cats to the OE axleback?

Zero. You will love it, however after a few months you will think it's too quite and want a full system like me right now......

I did a custom midpipe with my local exhaust shop which deleted the secondary cats but left the stock resonators. The car sounds great similar to stock but louder and you can feel that the gear shifts are harder. This is how the car should have sounded stock. Because of the stock resonator, you keep the deep tone

Is your custom pipe straight thru or did you do something else?

Great clip thanks for that. Would love to hear this one but with higher revs
