Help! Sunroof exploded. Need advice.
I have a 2022 x7 40i. Driving on fwy, sunroof open, and BANG. glass everywhere, I got cut and the falling glass damaged several part of the interior. Took pics and saved the glass. Well, I scheduled service and they passed me on the the body shop. Body shop is saying they don’t do warranty claims. So I am starting to get the run around.
Nothing hit the car, it just randomly exploded. I know this has happened to others on this forum. Has anyone been able to get this covered? Or am I SOL? Should I skip the dealerships and try to resolve with BMW directly? Thank you! |

I have seen this problem posted before and it could be caused by a defect in the glass. As such, it seems like it should be covered under warranty. If you can't find a dealer who will address the problem, I would address it with BMW.

Mick_87 , sorry to hear that and hope you ok. The same happened to me as well. But luckily the glass held together and I noticed it when it was parked. I took it to the dealer and they said its not covered in warranty. After back and forth, I ended up fixing it by paying the cost of part and labour. I had sky lounge so the total cost came to ~$2900 ... You are try checking with BMW / dealer and see if they can take it as a warranty issue Check this thread as well : https://g07.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1956678

Dealer should at least inspect it to see what may have caused it...look for an impact point. Like you said though, it happened without an impact, so if the dealer can't find an impact it should be replaced under warranty.
But, bet the dealer doesn't do that though. They will come up with some excuses to not have it under warranty. They ask you to do an insurance claim or pay for it out of pocket. At least this will be a comprehensive covered item, so just your deductible. Either way, sucks this happened. Good luck. |

Our 2020 X7 had this happen a month after we got it back in 2019. It was finally covered under warranty.

That was what I was wondering. Every thread, that I read, about the sunroof cracking, the OP had the sky lounge option. I feel the the culprit is the etches (that reflect the led lights) on the sunroof weakening the glass. It doesn't help that you have a hot sun and highway air pressures affecting the sunroof glass day in and day out.
I passed on that option because of threads dealing with this issue were too many for me. |

Happend to my 2019. Glass everywhere. At first they said it wasn't a warranty claim, but I guess since the X7 was new out that year, they fixed for free as "Good will" gesture.

Check out Wild Blue’s excursion from PCD back to Alaska. He documents his experience of his shattering while on the road and getting fixed at a Cali dealership, IIRC. There’s super-good info in there that may help!
