Post iDrive 8.5 Launch | Redesigned Climate Menu, ///M Specific iDrive 8.5

iDrive 8.5 Launch Info
Quote:
With the installation of I-Level …23-07-5XX (release date July 2023, pending verification), the BMW
Operating System 8 will be upgraded to BMW Operating System (“OS”) 8.5 with QuickSelect in
vehicles with the “HU-H5” head unit.
Redesigned Climate Menu
Quote:
Many menus are still the same or very similar, so customers should have no problem navigating the new
operating system. One notable exception is the Climate menu. This interface has been completely
redesigned. We abandoned the previous format and instead recreated our original Climate controls in
digital form.

The seat/steering wheel heating operation has also been changed. Pressing either of the Seat icons
displayed in the menu dock will activate a small pop-up menu. Here you can active the seat heating in
the familiar three stages of intensity. This will be is available from any menu you may currently be in, not
just the climate menu.
Unique iDrive 8.5 ///M
Quote:
M vehicles with the HU-H5 head unit will also receive the new operating system but with a unique
home screen reflecting the M experience. This is referred to as BMW Operating System 8.5 M. The
home screen in this version uses a different widget configuration with an aggressive slant to mirror the
M vehicle styling. The climate menu and other changes are similar to BMW Operating System 8.5 with
QuickSelect.

so much wasted space on the home screen of the regular version. i know their surveys show people love a big map, but i don't get it personally. the widget is too small compared to the map.

on my ID7 home screen, i've got the map on the left side and media info on the right side. the map's large enough to determine location/direction...

So, on this:

Looking at the ETK, the HU_HIGH4 (MGU21) is only valid on G2x/G8x builds until 30th june 2023. after that the part changes.

on the X7 forum, they found out there is a MGU21A, which is updatable to 8.5 from 8. It's too early to confirm as july onwards cars haven't landed yet, but there's a small chance there's a different HU in post july cars, and **MAYBE**
an update from 8 to 8.5 will come with the november i-level.

Old part for ROW: 65 12 5A8E740
Current part for ROW for repairs: 65 12 5B32389 (looking at the supersection)

There's no new line item *yet* on the etk. will check again in a month.

Time will tell.

I’d love to understand the technical reason behind leaving a system that’s barely been out a year without an upgrade path. Even an ”8.5 Lite” to bring some of the UI enhancements and improvements.

The MGU_22 has a new processor, and Wifi 6 for a start. here's the link to the other thread, there's loads of technical info on it.

BMW is still flailing about in this area.

The iDrve 7 "lite" mess as annoying... I'm still on that island.

But they really need to find a way to modularize this stuff more. Competition is delivering features for their cars with updates. BMW has been investing in "RSU" support and they still can't deliver updates for more than a year? At that point why even invest in RSU support?

They need to get to a point similar to Apple or Google where they can deliver updates to their cars for a 4 year timeframe, at least.

Yeah my 2020 G01 X3 is a kludge too.

It’s got iDrive 7 with the full digital cluster, but because it’s sitting on the old platform a bunch of the iD7 features (like remote updates, a lot of voice control functionality, etc) aren’t available.

It’s really not a big deal, I love both of the cars, it’s just a bit annoying (more so my new G81).

All I really want is the extra persistent controls in the vast and empty climate control bar, and the improved climate screen. No reason those can’t be done!

Just got my 2024 X5 50e back from the dealership with the idrive 8.5 "upgrade". Literally turned around to tell them they forgot to update. Apparently they did but there is almost zero change. The new Climate Menu doesn't exist.....total BS marketing!

Speechless! So much BMW hype....for nothing!

Edit: Dont loose hope. It might happen that the major update at dealers is needed....to get the new Climate control as a minor OTA update. Just guessing.

You mind sharing some photos? I’m curious because the assumption was it’d have the updated climate menu compared to idrive 8.

Is there anyone who’s used iDrive 8 and iDrive 8.5 and feel there’s that much of an improvement, you would hold off a 2024 G80 waiting for a 2025?

Yes I know you’ll always be waiting for the updated spec which doesn’t bother me. However, a lot of the reviews I’ve read, ID 8 was rushed and ID 8.5 had a lot of significant Improvements.
