So many issues and recalls on the iX. Even though I’ve really only been inconvenienced by the airbag recall and the seat module programming holding up OTA updates, the fact that my car is already out of date in less than six months of ownership with no upgrade path due to the headunit change in March, I’m really thinking about ordering an i5 M60. My dealer won’t charge me anything to order one, so I may just do it anyway. At least it will have highway assistant.

It appears they have fixed most the iDrive 8+ issues with newer hardware. Not sure how much longer I can stand rebooting iDrive on a weekly basis to fix problems no one can seem to solve.

I might have went with the i5 if I was certain it would have delivered in the autumn but given industry wide delays I didn't want to risk it. Now that I have the iX, I'm more inclined to wait a couple of years for the i5 to let it 'bake in' a bit. I'm also interested to see what BMW does with the available options 6-12 months in. Some things seem to be missing like laser lights and IAS, eARS, and such. Not that I think IAS is a must have in the G60 but it feels like a sign that they may take a more conservative approach to the launch and add features back as time goes on which is what they did with the G30 launch (pre-covid).

Another reason I may wait, and this is probably not an issue if you live in TX, but I'm enjoying not having to worry about scraping my underside when entering driveways in our hilly terrain. Ironically, this is less of a problem with stiffer M-Sport suspension despite riding lower than the standard suspension. However, it was still unavoidable in the G30 or G16. But as you can see from my signature, a 5-series will probably occupy my garage at some point in the future.

Nice looking car! If a sedan meets your needs it would be a fun ride. As with the iX, I suspect the range will be a bit better day to day than the EPA.

My only concern would be that again it’s a first year model, could just be trading one set of issues for another. Sort of a gamble that iDrive 8.5 will be better, continue to expect the occasional recall.

I traded in my‘19 M550 for the iX M60 and I miss that vehicle greatly. I had absolutely zero problems with it and only traded it in because it was a few weeks away from being out of warranty after four years of ownership. I thought it was best to trade it in before the G60’s came out. At this point, if I had the option to go back to January 7, I would have kept it.

so Car and Driver review says that 4 wheel steering is on the i5 m60. Is that true? Doesn't look like you speced that unless it is standard in the M60 version. This is a must have for me for parking lot maneuverability (as well as better handling on high speed corners) and one of the reasons I went for the iX m60 since the 50 is no longer available with that option.

I’ll have to look again, but I spec’d every possible option including the Carbon Fiber exterior trim which you almost never see on dealer-spec’d vehicles.

Update: yes, it’s standard on the M60:

• Single electric motor, rear-wheel drive (i5 eDrive40)
• Dual electric motor, all-wheel drive (i5 M60)

Update 2: I misread the question and it doesn’t look like it’s an option. Dammit!

Where do you see 4-wheel steering (IAS) as standard?

While I said IAS is not a must have on the G60, I just checked and it's wheel base is only 1" shorter than the iX so I may change my opinion of it's usefulness on the next generation 5'er.

My mistake. I misread what he was asking. Perhaps I should really wait until the i7 M70 configurator is available before making any decisions.

There's an old saying that you shouldn't buy a car's first 2 years of production, because they need to iron out the kinks. I feel like going from your troubled car to a brand-new model is just asking for trouble.

You’re probably right. And I thought I was safe buying a second year model iX. Wrong!

Seems like an incremental upgrade to me. Yes the head unit is better but it’s not a dedicated EV platform.

It would take level 3 for me to get interested.

Let us know when you get one..I had a 72 reg 545e for a few weeks but its not a patch on the ix for ambience or comfort or space. The 5 series will most likely be a downgrade in someways but will likely handle better.

I'd be hesitant to buy the first year of any model.

i7 M70 has a starting price of $168,500. It is over priced in my opinion (per pricing guide posted in the i7 forum). Seems BMW is attempting to move up market in the worst way, by just charging more, not by improving options in any way.

My 2022 5 Series has been flawless. I love the luxury and ride of my iX, but all the recalls and knowing our iDrive is DOA, is a total bummer and a little bit of a joy kill.

I am drooling every time I see an i7 and the EQE AMG (looks soooo much better than EQS).

I think you guys are right. I don’t want to make an impulsive decision. I really do like driving my iX and at the end of the day, that’s what is really important. My sales guy at Momentum BMW says they will have their i5 demo unit next month. I’ll test drive it then and make my decision. If I did order one now, I’d be looking at an October delivery.

I also did play with BMW UK configurator for the i7 M70. By the time I added the options I would want, assuming they were available here, we are looking at 225K USD. Ouch. What we really need are fully electric, true M vehicle options.

The iX is supposedly getting a facelift in 2025, so maybe waiting a bit more you could decide if you wanted to jump to a more mature iteration.

I think I can wait that long. I’m going to start rebooting iDrive weekly whether it needs it or not. That way I’m not as irritated when I have no choice but to do it. 😂😂😂

Wow. What's the source of this info on the facelift timing? I might then shift my August build/November delivery iX M60 a few months forward.

I have no inside info. Just some articles that popped up stating even updated drivetrain planned, So ‘22,’23,’24 then facelift, but who knows - I would be interested in more official info myself. I feel like most models facelift after four or five years?

I think people forget there is a ‘22 and we are coming up on third year, probably because of slow ramp up and lack of M60 first year.
