What the hell is going on with BMW?

Not sure if this article was posted here before (I apologize if it's a duplicate) but what a disappointment with how this company is going... For BMW to decide not to offer a next generation M550 is pretty stupid especially when they are offering this engine now on the 7-series. There were rumours that the V8 will be replaced with a tuned six twin-turbo with some kind of a hybrid technology but according to Car & Driver, it does seem so. Not everyone wants an EV especially when the infrastructure in North America does not support such technology yet. Unless your driving is mainly city and nearby, EV is useless...

As far as I'm concerned, this company is going downhill with their offerings as well as their design. Maybe it's time to jump to Benz as they seem to know what the hell they are doing. Too bad!!!!

a 550e will come out which is like the 545e not sold in the usa. should be a 2025 model thats why you probably dont see it in the car and driver article. the article mentions twice that a plug in model is coming in the future.

additionally a m560e should come out, but thats not official yet. and i do find that it might be odd to have a 550e and a m560e.

M Benz knows what they're doing? I suggest watching this before you commit to that statement. Lol

I have on very good authority that an M560E hybrid with M550 like or plus power will be coming…next model year.

I agree with everything the OP said. I’m very disappointed and frustrated by the new 5—the looks, the apparent de-contenting of the car and the lineup of vehicles available. It’s a head scratcher.

I currently have a 2021 M550 (that replaced a 2018 540) that is by far the best vehicle—of many—I’ve owned. I would get another in an instant and wish I had pushed to do so with an early move to a 2023 (my lease is up in October). Also have a 2022 X5, preceded by 2019 and 2016 X5s and a 2013 X3. Our experience with BMW and our dealer has been great and it seemed an automatic my M550 would be replaced by its successor vehicle. Well, not so much.

I’m hoping when I actually see the new 5 in person I’ll like it more—but I’m not sure that will be the case. Currently pondering getting a X5 M60 (current X5 is principally my wife’s car) as that’s the closest thing to what I have now, Also considering an X5 50E that I’d drive for a year and then swap over to my wife when current X5 is up, hopefully with a clearer picture of what’s available for me. Love the M340 but don’t think the seats and interior will cut it after being in the 5 series strata. Also thinking of extending my lease or even buying my M550.

BMW is not making this easy this go around.

just saw the new 5 series in real life the other day with m sport package and 21s. looks amazing. looks aggressive and modern. wondering how everyone else's thoughts will change as well once they see it in real life. the extra inches makes the cars bigger and bolder too, 3 series looks tiny compared to it. cant wait for the top model ice to come out.

If you're interested in a 2023 M550 you can still order it, I was ready to pull the plug on one two weeks ago but the interest rates in Canada are crazy so decided to wait. You can most likely sell your current M550 and make money with it considering how expensive used cars have been! Or since you have a good relationship with your dealer, they can probably help you with the few months remaining on your lease.

EOP on G30 was 06/2023.

You can probably still order an M5, last orders were taken about 2 months ago for the 550 in the US. Not quite sure if the g30 orders were still open post g60 unveil in May.

When are i5’s supposed to be at dealers? Hoping I’ll like the G60 a lot more in person, but not in a hurry to replace my G30 with less than 40k miles. Most likely would get the 540i again, possibly M560e, but would have to be really impressed by the hybrid power train.

Personally, I love the new i5 and i7 -- and will purchase the latter. I may not have had or cared to own a BMW in the past, but I like what I see today. Not everybody compares today's models to yesteryear -- difference of opinion I guess. :-)

As a 30 year owner of the brand I prefer a more traditional styling evolution. But your point is spot on from BMWs perspective in growing the brand and business. If they gain more new customers than they lose of old customers like me, they are successful.

I had 2 E39s but didn’t like the E60 so had 3ers for years, then returned to the 5er with the G30. But the 5 just fits my needs now.

I appreciate that. In fairness to you and others, at 66, I'm also old school myself with most things. As an example, in baseball, I don't care for the designated hitter or rules against a catcher blocking the plate. etc. My point here is, I can see both sides of it for previous owners like you, as opposed to complete [BMW ownership] newbies like me.

BMW - like other car manufacturers - has significantly increased emphasis on cutting costs, setting a target of 25% per vehicle by 2025. The results are of course easily predicted.

I think it’s a case of government regulations forcing car manufacturers down this route
I think each year they have to show that the cars produced emit ever lower co2 figures . I guess they can only continue to seek high co2 emitters like m cars because they are selling so many EVs
