Sounds like it's telling you your battery is dying. Has it been hot in TN this week?

Does a bear shit in the woods? Lol. I’m in Memphis, it’s pretty hot and humid in the summer. It’s making a squealing sound in gear but not in park. Maybe a belt is loose?

That would make sense if belt is slipping and alternator not getting full charge to battery.

Thank you for the replies. I’ll try and remember to report back. Whatever it is should be covered. Dropping it off in the morning.

Did you have to get towed?

Or the battery is screaming in agony (lol). Could be the parking brake not disengaging.

I don’t think so, the faint squealing noise was standing still but in drive. Honestly it sounded like a belt.

Nah he said I could drive it in. So hopefully the tow won’t be needed!

Not sure about the 40i, but most cars now use a single serpentine belt that seems less likely to slip than the several v-belts in older cars, unless perhaps the engine has been experienced considerable aggressive acceleration that might stretch it. A trip to the service dept seems necessary to sort it out.

I just dropped it off. Error message disappeared of course. But hopefully recent enough that it’s still stored in the computer.

Should be stored, had a another issues on MY24 M60i that mines did not show on dashboard, but dealer was able to see. The computer in these cars are too advanced for their own good.

I think so too. We’ll find out when they can get to it. Luckily, they had a loaner available.

On the topic of loaners - I enjoy getting to drive these other models but they’re always base models with very little options, if any. Understandable and grateful to have them but these base sport seats SUCK! Experienced them in the X6 and now 530. I will never drive a BMW with those seats. I’d rather just get a different brand all together. The multi contour changes the entire experience for us.

This is the worst part of dealership "service". You make an appointment, and it's not for a time slot for when somebody can work on you car, but it's a reservation for a parking spot in the service lot.

They couldn’t replicate the error message. They did see it stored and it did point to an alternator fault of some sort. But everything checked out fine. They updated software and test drove it… they test drove it a lot. More than I was comfortable with but I trust my service advisor and basically told him that and said “whatever YOU think is best” and basically put the responsibility on him.

In the end, just a software update and chalked it up to a computer glitch. Hope that’s all it is.

Of course it’s all warrantied so no charge… so they had to try and upsell $150 worth of wiper blades. I passed.

I saw on another forum an alternator bearing that had frozen. Caused the belt to squeal and the battery failed to charge. Might be worth while to check the alternator mechanical integrity -- could be a bearing on its way out, and I'm pretty sure bearings don't throw error codes.

I’ll keep that info handy. If I have any further issue or signs of problems, I’ll make sure they check that.

I had this same set of codes and messages with new MY22 X5 40i with ~1800 miles, <2 months after delivery. SA said there was a tech bulletin and it checked out after completing 2 of the 3 steps. Six weeks later at Disney World, deja vu all over again. I called SA and he has the nerve to say I've driven it almost 1000 miles. At Fields BMW, South Orlando, they determine it's same as original problem, so then Fields has to get approval to redo warranty work charged by my SA. Fields replaced alternator, tensioner, and belt; all three steps of technical bulletin. Good Luck!

You don’t happen to have the technical bulletin handy do you?

In the 18 or so months I’ve dealt with them, my dealer has been pretty good about getting things right even if the first attempt doesn’t get it. I’m not worried about them treating me right, but I don’t want my wife to get stranded.

Sorry, no. The two occurrences were Dec 2021 and Jan 2022, and I have switched to a new SA at my dealer.
