Credit Card Fraud is out of control, Visa/MC making it worse, solution?
In the past 12m I think we have had 5 cards frauded between wife & I. Last situation is the most ridiculous.
Received a fraud alert, called CC company disputed charge and was told card also added to an apple pay which we didn't do. New card issued and on the way. Hadn't even opened new card mail yet. Look online and there's already charges to the new card! Call and they automatically updated the new card info to the fraudsters apple pay! Apparently Visa & MC now automatically update info with linked merchants and recurring payments. Found this out also just few weeks ago when my AAA renewed and I never gave them the updated card info. Citibank Visa said they can disable auto updates. BMW Elan MC said they can not, which then raises the question can Citi Visa really do it... Any ideas tips tricks to minimizing or preventing CC fraud these days? Feel like going old school & cash...

Ca$h. Make sure you have an RFID wallet. There are lots of people with skimmers out there. They seem nonchalant, simply standing around looking at their phones. The issue is these people are very difficult to catch and they know it. They skim your card, leave and spend a bunch of money quickly because they know the card will get blocked. Also only use reputable sites if buying online or use a proxy service that protects you in the case of large purchases.

I'm on the other side of this as a internet merchant. I spend a hour this morning on a dispute. Earlier this week I won 8 Ebay disputes. Yes it's a major issue on both sides.
First determine the nature of the fraud. Find out if the transaction had a CVV2 code used. Also (this may be hard to get) find out the IP address of the fraud charge. If there is no CVV2 code and the IP code verifies over seas. Think about changing your bank. Here are my tips. Most banks can set a spending limit that will freeze the transaction until you reply to a email or a text. Use apple pay for local dining to reduce card duplication. Never allow card out of sight. When shopping on line most reputable companies will have a check out that uses stripe or similar gateway that will require a text to complete transaction. PayPal tends to be very secure IMO as an alternative. Good luck it's ugly out there. |

There have been a number of local news articles on skimmers being found in service stations and convenience stores. I understand this is a issue at airports also. Cash works until they take it away from us.

There's a supermarket called Winco, like Aldi, no CC only debit. Outside of BoA ATM that is the only place wife used that card which had fraud recently. I never use my bank/atm/debit on anything but trusted ATMs.

i MAY be super lucky or just super careful... but I use my card everywhere on the street and really only reputable online sites... never had an issue.... the only time i've had an issue when the tip i put in on a bill at a restaurant was entirely changed (way over 20%)... turns out that is highly illegal and I was refunded everything

I don't debit online, only credit.
I bought 3 surfboards and a wetsuit in Hawaii. I've been, but didn't surf. I bought camera gear, went on safari in Africa. Never been. All those were erased from Visa. Auto renewal of cards is an issue. At work, it's such an issue because it does NOT happen for online customers. Our portal for updating cards is a nightmare. On a site dealing with credit/bank accounts, "Opps, something went wrong" is just not an acceptable response. *I* would never give my company my digits!

That’s so odd. Doesn’t your new card have to be activated first by you before you are able use it? Interesting it’s already updated to fraudsters Apple Pay when you get a new card… there should be some kind of security measure for this?

Unfortunately it got canceled before Army surplus sent that pallet of 7.62 that I bid $1000 on. Well, at least SOMEBODY bid $1000, with my card. I don't have anything chambered in 7.62

Ya'd think, Citi kept asking if I updated or did something, was losing my patience saying several times I literally just opened the mail and card not activated. Its MC & Visa that implemented the auto update for all cards, Citi claims I am opted out on that Visa, first MC I called said its not possible.

I had an odd one tonight. Got a notification from Walmart that "my" order was shipped, except I didn't order anything. It was being shipped to a person in Vermont. I was able to cancel the order, a $40 printer, and removed their address. Odd thing is is that they used a gift card to buy it, my guess is they bought the card with a stolen credit card. I changed my account password as obviously it was hacked.
Apparently this is a big issue at Walmart, lots of people complaining and think it may somehow be an inside job. I told customer service chat what happen and the steps I took, they said thanks for telling us then blocked my IP address. That also is a move people say they take. Great company.... |

Unfortunately it will only get worse as we all move towards a cashless society. I'm as bad as the next person as we live well away from the city so shop on line for a great many things. I try to not use my CC's in person and use debit but honestly am considering using cash as much as possible but I see a very few retailers now refusing cash and I suspect that will increase if more and more people continue to use only CCs.

The activity on the replacement card may be activity on the old card migrated to the new card.
We usually have at least one fraud incident per year. To deal with it, I am using 3 cards: to year and 1/2 1 exclusively for recurring payments set up online (utilities, insurance, business email hosting, etc.) 1 exclusively for when we drive to NC (gas, meals, etc.) 1 for everything else Unless the one for recurring payments gets compromised, it is only a minor hassle to deal with a replacement card. I used to have just one card I used for everything, but when it got compromised, it was a big PITA to change recurring payments to the new card. As you noted, some update automatically nowadays, but that wasn't always the way it worked and isn't the case for every account. I have not had a fraudulent auto pay updated (yet), but presumably the CC company will block any merchants you dispute as fraud so I actually like the auto update functionality. Also, somewhat related, I keep my credit frozen and only unfreeze it when I need to apply for credit, which is rare. You'd be surprised how much of your personal information is in circulation.

I use my CC everywhere for everything & don't worry about it. A couple of times I have had problems but never a serious one. Normally CC calls me & asks if I just spent "$X" in some random city around the U.S. ($1k in Walmart in Chicago, $125 for gas in S. FL - not sure why they ever allow this, plane tickets- seems impossible to make this work), they know it isn't me as I just charged something in a complete different city.
From 2017-2022 spent 40% of my time in Thailand, traveling the region and Middle East (almost 1.5 years didn't travel because of Covid). Stupid part about U.S. system is a lot of the world requires you to add a 4 digit PIN when charging something (reduces a lot of fraud), & when you pay at a restaurant they bring the machine to you (CC never leaves your sight). In the U.S. we complain about fraud but don't even take basic precautions used in 3rd world countries.

I have had issues with my PNC Visa. I use it for the majority of my purchases and it constantly gets hacked. What I ended up doing is moving all of my autopay transactions that I can use a credit card onto a Bank of America Visa. And that's the only thing that card is used for. Funny, that account has yet to be hacked since the day I opened it up which has been many many years.
