X5 x drive 40i v X3 M40i
Hi, in the market for my first BMW. I’ve been lingering in the X3 forum for a bit… Just backed out of an order for X3 M40i and before I move forward with another dealer, I wanted to explore my options and take another look at X5. My X3 build was loaded. I need to stay with the X5xdrive for price. I’d get premium package, HK, parking, heated stuff…what about the DAPP? Is it worth it? Does the X5 have ACC standard or is it part of DAPP like on the X3? Anyone else toggle between these two cars? I currently drive Volvo XC90 going off lease in December. Thanks for your input!

I am debating the same issue (currently have an X3 M40i and love it; may give to my son if I decide to proceed). May go with X3 M40i again as in am not sure of iDrive 8.5 and no buttons (also, A/C vents in LCI X5 are small slim vents that are difficult to aim with a flimsy looking knob). All new X5 LCIs look like the have the "hockey puck" upfront for the ACC but it is just to save costs. If you want ACC, you have to order DAPP on both X3 M40i and X5 40i. X5 LCI is much better than older X5 with the updated (higher HP) engine. I would not have considered pre-LCI X5 as I found them to weak and soft (but I value performance over comfort and insist on the Sport version). Test drive them both and decide on your priorities. Good luck with your decision.

Given the X3 refresh next summer, I assume (but don’t know) you can get a great deal on X3. But within less than a year you would be driving an ‘old’ car. Which May or May not matter to you, of course.

I sold my 21' X3 M40i and got a 2024 X5 40i. My X3 had 21" wheels and was a blast to drive but it was harsh and stiff. The X5 is much smoother with 20" wheels in a square vs staggered set up that I had before.
Overall, they are two very different vehicles. Go with the M40i if you want more fun and the X5 for a more comfortable ride. |

What is your priority? I owned X3 M40i, currently drive X5 50e and have driven X5 40i for >2000 miles.
Comparing X5 40i vs X3 M40i: - X3 is a much more fun car. The sounds. The agility. - X3 M40i acceleration is noticeably faster than X5 40i, on par with X5 50e. However, X5 feels much more "stable" at high speed. - X5 windnoise is much lower than X3 - X3 M40i suspension is quite hard and feels not as refined; X5 40i is very comfy for both regular and air suspension - X3 is due for refresh late next year. Current gen X3 has ID7 if you like buttons, however electronics and feature is a generation behind X5 LCI. Especially the "assisted driving plus" is way more smooth and more capable in X5 LCI. - X3 seating is not comfy for many people (common complaint) over long trip but X5 seat even without any upgrade are mostly rated very comfortable - X5 is a larger and more luxury vehicle; however do not expect too much more room on back seat. You get more trunk space in X5 and split tailgate is nice. |

I was originally looking at x5 40i vs x3 m40i. I was looking for a good cruiser as I drive 200 miles to my office once a month. Overall the x5 was way more comfortable and at the high end (options wise) it has so many more creature comforts. The Sky Lounge is actually something I enjoy having and I always get compliments on it from passengers, massage seats was also a huge plus as I have a herniated disks in my lower spine. And the dap basically drives the vehicle for me (available on x3, but worth every penny)
I did like the perceived extra oomph from the x3 m40i and the burbles we’re also fun, but let’s be real it’s the same engine and I can tune that in if I really want it that bad. Went with the X5 and don’t regret it, but if I’m completely honest, we’re looking at an x3 for the wife and I might use that more for short grocery trips and small errand runs. |
