Why should student loan debt be cancelled?
What is the argument for?
Adults voluntarily took out loans and now for some reason believe they should be absolved because they don't make enough money. |

Nothing must stand in the way of profit, not the health of the population, not education, only short term profits for BigCorp/Pharma/Finance matters.
Feed people junk food, there's money to be made. As long as we make them pay for eating our junk. Win win for BigCorp and BigPharma....... Send people to college and university, then they will be in debt to Big Finance for life..... Roger. Roger. |

it shouldn't be... its very straighforward lol...
the question in this predicament that no one seems to have asked is why is upper education so expensive in the first place in the USA? seems everyone is scared to resolve that because it's an issue caused by the very government that has given these loans out in the first place... all while backing and subsidizing College and Universities with taxpayer dollars... the schools have gotten bloated and now run like corporations... ...but the 2nd part of the argument someone could make here... is why where PPP loans forgiven for profitable businesses as well?

If the government wants to give people their student loan money back I'm all for it, as long as it's everyone that has ever had a student loan. And then, of course, pay back all those long hours everybody else put in so they didn't have to get a loan. I'd be good with that.

As far as I know, new student loans are still being funded, including loans to people who qualify for forgiveness. Maybe I’m mistaken but there is very little talk of anything but forgiveness. How about ending (or at least radically reforming) the program first before talking about cancellations and refunds if it is such an unfair program (or whatever the logic is to forgive loans)? Until then, it’s just trying to buy votes.

People made a choice they couldn't afford. They could have gone to a different school that didn't cost as much. They could have chosen a degree that would actually get them a good paying job. Why should tax payers have to pay for their choices? If you chose to buy something you can't afford, you shouldn't have to pay for it? Where is the personal responsibility?

I think student loan forgiveness is basically the biggest "F U" to people who purposely didn't pursue college because they couldn't afford it in the first place, or in my case, paid their way working 2 jobs as they went.

This gets fixed tomorrow if Colleges back their own loans and act as the bank handing out the loan without government backing.
