Key Fob goes into sleep mode automatically?

Apparently the key fob automatically goes into sleep mode after 3 minutes of unactivity and there is no need for an RIFD blocker

So I was informed by the salesperson, but I have been unable to confirm looking through the literature and app.

Has anyone else been told this?
thanks
brian

Yes they do go to sleep after a few minutes and wake up again when you pick it up or move it. I tried it on mine just to be sure.

So would that mean if you're walking around with it in your pocket it would continually wake up? Is the concern that it could be read/cloned by an RFID reader?

Correct. I tested it on mine and I think after 3 mins of not moving, it is disabled.

For the sake of conversation, how did you test it?

I put the key on top of my wheelie bin and left it about 1m from the drivers door. I then repeated timing how long it was until the door wouldn't open despite the key being right next to it.

The car has Digital Key Plus that is UWB-based. As I already asked in different forum threads, we all need to figure out if a key fob is RFID, BLE or UWB. If it is UWB based - we all do not need to care at all about RFID blockers/readers and other key fob related theft subjects, because for now, it is impossible to hack it. I mean all is possible eventually, but the cost of the solution will be cosmically high and not comparable with any car cost or even jet.

UWB is using high frequency and wide spectrum for nanosecond pulsing signal that allows to detect key fob location and to track its movement real-time with centimeter precision.

In simple words, imagine, you left the car and are going with the key fob to you home, then put the key fob on the shelf at home, all that was tracked and recorded by the car, the car knows the location of the key fob, the path how it appeared there and where to expect it next time. Then in 1 hour, you took the key, the key woke up, handshake with the car happened and the car compared the current location of the key with last recorded location, then you going to the car, all is tracked meanwhile and compared, and the car checks that indeed this key is moving to the car, and, with proximity of 50 cm, if all is good, the car triggers unlocking, then, when the key is physically inside the car, the car allows starting up. In fact algorithms are much more complex and encryption is applied on top.
In fact, some UWB chips are using BLE just to do initial handshake between transmitter and receiver(like kickstarting) but this fact can be neglected as this is just to trigger UWB and all theft threatening things like unlocking or engine start is UWB based eventually like described above.

So if key fob is UWB based - Relax And if it is not - we just all need to move to devices with UWB for comfort access.

I was under the impression that this was also possible with select Android based phones that had UWB chips as well?

Check this link

Its written:

Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology allows precision location pinpointing between the vehicle and the key or compatible smartphone.

I guess, "or" means that the key also is UWB.

I still cant understand why BMW leaves their drivers in the dark. If the manual doesnt state something, how one can know? These should be advertising candies also!

Nice! Good finding! I wrote to BMW Canada and they said we do not know and pointed fingers to dealership who are "educated". When I asked my dealer(BMW Genius) before what is the manufacture of 7speed DCT gearbox I received we do not know (so they are not Genius). That's why did not bothered them with UWB expecting another "we do not know".
