Under the M50 title they are showing an S38B32 engine
No mention of the M30 straight six? Probably the most reliable engine BMW ever made.
The article is just "content", it doesn't need to be accurate.

I'm not sure if there is a better mass produced engine today.

Yeah look at the author’s bio.
https://www.slashgear.com/author/joecapraro/

He probably wrote the article on spec for Slashgear. No research needed. Just blather to fill space, here’s your 30 cents per word, kid.

And yes the M30 series of engines that BMW produced for decades is absolutely a work of art and science.

The B58 hasn’t been around long enough to judge its reliability. Give it another 5 years and see if it turns into another N54 HPFP or nikasil fiasco.

They forgot to mention the N52 can reach mileages up to and past 400,000.

The most concerning issue with the B58 is the threat of a leaky injector washing out the cylinder coating, destroying the engine. So that's a bit of an Achilles heel although not very common (yet).

I can also walk down a street and step on some uneven pavement and break my ankle.

IMHO, the B58 engine is a winner!

It's been around almost 10 years, and either it or the B48 (which is just a B58 with two cylinders lopped off) has been in basically every product BMW has made in that time period. There are roughly 2M of these engines out in the world, and no major "gotchas" have been found yet. Issues with the N54s HPFP started showing up about 2 weeks after the first one was sold.

Well it went into production vehicles around 2015-2016, right? So eight years.

And from our own community:
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1292652

Looks like VCGs, VANOS, etc.
still you make a fair point.

Unfortunately none of this matters since most B58’s will be scrapped in favour of EV’s. They will be obsolete before most see end of useful life.

LOL, they left the M30 off?!?! Seriously? B58 hasn't been out long enough to warrant such praise, let me know what those things are doing 15-20 years from now. It's a great engine, but if we're talking about long term reliability it needs a few more years under its belt.

My $.02, YMMV
