Reliability of 2020-2022 X7

Likely many of you are low mileage users and stuff is covered under warranty but how has the reliability of the motor, suspension, and electronics been with your cars? More specifically, any unforeseen repairs?

Considering a used X7 and debating if warranty is necessary. Likely get a model with 20k miles and drive it for 5-6 years (<100k total at EOL).

Recommendations?

My thought is a 2022 x7M50 with DHP. All other options I don’t care about as the standard features are excellent on that model.

I have a 2020 X7 40i with 52K miles on the odometer (October 2019 Build date). I've had 4minor issues with mine. All within the first year of ownership. Driver's side center console heated armrest failed. Gas cap door sticking. Front radiator louver failed which didn't throw any codes and wind noise from gasket issues related to an SIB. All repaired/replaced under warranty.

Everything else has just been software bug fixes. Overall it's been one of the most reliable cars I've owned. No squeaks or rattles yet either.

2021 x7 with about 50k miles. Other than lots of rubber no issues what so ever except some minor stuff within the first few months which I can’t even recall.

Engine and transmission are solid on these cars, especially the 6cyl version. You’ll always get some minor stuff with the advanced electronics.

Would you consider an extended warranty (CPO wrap, CNA extended warranty)? The thought of a BMW outside of warranty (especially past 75k miles) sounds terribly expensive but it seems like they have built these fairly well from years of experience on preceding models.

What says you?

I have a 2019 X7 5.0M (first production year) and have had my share of issues. Most of the issues were dealt within the first 12 months such as seat controls, back seat folding issues. Lately (50K to 60KMiles) I have had failure of the A/C control unit, BMW covered it as it was within 1Kmiles past the initial warranty period. Next a failure of the 3d back up camera with a message "camera disfunction" (right side) This is annoying but not detrimental. I have had issues with the transfer case which I mentioned at 20K, 30K and 50K service int'vals @ the dealer. Oil was changed @30K but problem persists, today=$8500repair. BMW proposed we go 50/50 on repair cost. Still a serious nut but reasonable solution in my book. Other than these issues, car drives like new with 60Kmiles. 20/20 hindsight should have opted for the BMW extended 100K warranty.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

After further research, and considering I’ll take a small loan to pay for a used model, I’ll be sticking with the 40i version and considering extending the CPO warranty. I will lose out on B&W stereo option, and DHP, but should be a better call for 2022 model.

I’m not sure my pocket will afford 2023 model next year. Seems like the upgrades to the motor make it more palatable on the road which is appealing - but not $15-20k more appealing.

is this transfer case noise a whirring/turbine noise that increases with speed? and is louder when hotter outside or car is hot?

If so I have that and with only 28k miles..has been going on for past 2-3k miles. dealer in Vermont claimed they didn't hear it, I took them for a drive, they then admitted they hear it but didn't know what to tell BMW it was. Will be taking it in to a larger dealer in FL soon.

I think if you plan on keeping the car past the factory warranty it makes sense to get the extended warranty. The cars these days seem to be more reliable from what we see in our shops than years before and the major issues do not pop up as frequently as years back, however they do still pop up. This will be the case with any car TBH.

there are two trains of thought on ext warranties some say you don't need it use that money in other ways and take it to the indy shops and saves you money others say why risk it and better to be safe then sorry.

IF anyone is interested we do blow them out for forum members. Just follow the info here in first post

2020 M50i. Fuel pump stopped working at 30k. Replaced under warranty. Lower trunk door weak power during opening and closing process at 40k. Replaced under warranty. Steering wheel making loud noises during start up and stop at 40k. Replaced under warranty. Front differential loud grinding and whistling sounds at 54k. Replaced under CPO warranty. I really like the vehicle, but I have a feeling I might have to purchase a third party warranty after my CPO ends next year.

How much are you quoted for extended the CPO?

I bought mine used at 20k in late 2021(Needed the "Tunable" model). CPO was free, and I declined any extended warranties. I spoke to CarShield a few weeks ago for a full bumper to bumper warranty coverage for $2000 a year with $100 deductible. I'm pretty sure I could have haggled it down to $1800 a year, but CarShield has some very mixed reviews.

I thought you could extend cPO with wrap warranty. essentially turning CPO into a 3 year, unlimited mile warranty. Have you explored that route yet?

Purchased a 2019 X7 40i under CPO last November ‘22.

Starter went out, killed battery, CPO covered starter ~$1300ish, battery $500 was out of pocket

Steering wheel vibration assembly, disabled driving assist functions— CPO covered, cost unknown

Emergency call service malfunction, disabled gps function, current at BMW so no cost estimate
*Update* the seal around the Sharkfin deteriorated and burnt out the antenna and module, they are saying it’s a wear item and not covered under CPO ~$2700….. now I gotta deal with the service manager

Will trade in once CPO warranty is up next summer…..

We got a CPO. it was 2021 with 15k miles. The only issue the car had prior to us purchasing it was that the comfort access system didn't recognize the key. The dealer had it module replace. The issue i see now is that i can't grab and open the doors. We did get the extended warranty, so will be taking that in for a look. Other than that, i haven't encounter any new issues.

Seems like 2019-2020 are plagued with new generation problems. From what I’ve read, 2022 seem to be fairly solid - however, it’s still early as it’s only been 2 years and generally people who afford these cars don’t drive nearly as much.

This would have to be purchased at the time of vehicle purchase. The price was way to expensive.

Definitely not true! I plan on putting 18k/year on my 24 760 and my wife puts at least that on the x7.

I’m pretty sure you can buy this in the BMW app at any point during the CPO warranty period. Call one of the forum reps to inquire.

Jut the opposite. The earlier were non-hybrid and are rock solid and very desirable at this point as well as more premium build materials and available options.
The little hybrid helper motor in the transmission BMW introduced in 2023 is a mess as in “Drivetrain Malfunction” and bricking the vehicle, etc….
Many bailing out of their LCI from not trusting their reliability and buying CPO 2020 X7 models.
