X1 M35i - wheel gap?

Considering a '24 X1 M35i, with the stock 19" 871M rims with all-seasons. In some photos, the wheel well gap looks very large, like the car is slightly lifted. Does the wheel gap look large in person? Wondering if the drive mode will affect this, i.e. suspension is lowered in sport or sport plus?

Height will not change with mode as the "adaptive suspension" is not actually controlled by mode.

It looked a bit tall to me to. As I understand it, the M35 should be 15 mm lower than the other X1's.

Keep in mind some new photos we are seeing may settle a bit as they are driven if they are brand new cars, or cars may not have had shipping blocks removed. But it could also just be taller than is ideal.

I have an M Sport, which is 15mm lower than the X Line and base models. Wheel gap still looks huge to me, but I came from a long history of lowered cars, so I’ve just figured this is what an SUV is like lol. The urge to lower it is strong, but I don’t want to give up the ground clearance.

I'm going to be leasing so lowering isn't an option. The gap looks larger in the rear than front FWIW. I was thinking maybe it's to make room for the optional 20" wheels, but my X3 M40i with 19's ride height looks normal. I'm picky about these things so I'm hoping it's not an issue but would like to hear more opinions.

Mine did settle a little bit after time, but the gap is still larger than I’m used to seeing. My dealer is cool about mods for the most part, so as long as I put it back to OEM before I turn it in they’re cool about it. Still won’t do it though, rather put the money towards a good coilover kit for my other car. It currently has the Turner kit in it which is horrible on the street but probably pretty decent on the track.

I saw a previous generation F48 X1 when I was visiting Irvine last year. It belonged to my friend's neighbor. It was comical to see him drive that super low X1 at a 45-degree angle just to enter/exit his driveway.(otherwise, the bottom of the front bumper would rub against the concrete driveway) Although... people on the West Coast, especially LA area, do some of the craziest car mods in the world. I have nothing but the utmost respect for their courage!

I really doubt it’s to make space for the 20” wheels.

I went from the 19” 871M to the 20” 872M, and the difference in height is negligible (1-3mm difference if I remember correctly).

But this was expected anyway because the 19s sit on 245/45 tires, whereas the 20s sit on 245/40 tires. This sidewall size difference cancels out the difference in rim size.

I’ve added an old photo of my iX1 M Sport on the 20” wheels. I increased the exposure and decreased contrast so you can see the tires more clearly!

The ride height should be quite similar to the M35i (due to the extra weight from the batteries)

At my condo, the entrance ramp is very steep, followed by an immediate 90 degree turn. My bone stock, OEM '20 430 would scrape the front lip at anything less than about a 60º angle. My '11 e90 on Ohlins coilovers and 19" BBS LM-R's......that was a challenge for the first month lol.

Depending on angle it can come off as really big or not at all, dead on it looks very aggresssive for an SAV

Thanks. This looks perfect to me, so maybe this is a non-issue - same color I want - Space Silver right?

Yep! Space silver!

I wouldn’t worry about the gap at all! For an SUV, the gap on the M35i and iX1 is really quite minimal. Sure it can be lowered, but it really doesn’t need it.

in that picture, is the yellow rectangle the standard parking space size in Austria? The X1/iX1 is 4500mm, which seems to fit that space perfectly.

the length was one of the reasons I got the X1. my previous SUV was long, at 5200mm. it could not fit inside the garage of my new house.(because I built shelves around the inside walls) The X1 was perfect and I could even open the tailgate completely with the garage door closed. It was also so much easier to park on the streets in the city.

This spot is considered the official parking size in Austria: 2500x5000mm. However, for privately owned parking garages, these can be smaller, especially in width.

Space Silver reminds me a lot of Porsche's GT Silver which is a huge compliment - best color IMO followed by storm bay. But we digress from the original point of this post.

speaking of Porsche, my friend bought a Porsche Macan last year. Its wheel gap is more appropriate for a sporty SUV. The X1 really just needs to reduce that wheel gap by about 1 inch to make it look nicer.

I don’t think the gap itself is that bad, it’s just the wheel wells are so obtuse in design and semi square ish so I think even a 22” wheel would look like there’s still a gap.

Exactly this! The arches don’t conform to the tire shape as the Porsche Mayan in the pic above. So even, as you say, with 22s there will still be a gap.

There’s a noticeable difference in space from day 1 to your ride height now, so I think it’s a break in period, albeit maybe not as low as yours due to weight
