Rattling from the back area around 30-40 mph on bumpy roads (i5 M60)?

So, I've been going out nightly for drives to get used to the features on the car when there aren't many people out. I want to mess with the lane change and assisted driving stuff to get used to quirks. However, the past two times I've gone out for a drive, I'm hearing a fairly loud rattle from the left side around the back seat area. The first time it wasn't super pronounced, and wasn't audible over music. I talked to the dealer the next day and they had a tech ride along with me. We heard it, but barely. They said they couldn't tell what it was, let them know if it got worse. Tonight, it was bad enough to hear over music and wasn't just the buzzing type rattling but it sounded louder and a bit deeper for lack of a better way to put it.

I'm getting a hold of my salesperson tomorrow to make her aware of the issue and will be calling service first thing Monday morning when the department is open. But has anyone else encountered this and has a possible easy fix? I've tried putting down the back seats, taking everything out of the underfloor storage, buckled all the seatbelts, stuffed something between the garment holder things above the doors, popped all the tether tabs in the back, etc. Nothing seems to stop it. Sometimes it'll go away for a minute or so but will generally come back at the mentioned speeds.

I'm just...frustrated at this point. I don't expect there to be absolutely no noises or rattles whatsoever. I really don't expect perfection. But I expect to not hear rattles this obnoxious in the first 200 miles on a car But now I'm wondering if the problem is really just me? If I'm just imagining all this stuff?

I love the seats, they work great for me even at my size, and are amazingly soft. The car drives well, iDrive 8.5 is great, and the sound system is excellent in the car. And maybe I'm just too sensitive to sounds like this, but it really takes away from any fun and enjoyment when all i hear is rattles and buzzes. Maybe I'm bad at describing noises too, I don't know. I always worry I suck at this kind of thing.

I don't know, y'all. I'm just running out of mental energy to constantly be dealing with car issues. I was hoping to be done with them here, but it turns out I'm not.

I'm having the same issue - rattle coming from somewhere in the back. I tried so hard to find where it came from and finally tonight I think I found it - it's something inside the seats - I think it's the little cover from the "comfort & travel system" where the USB-C port is in the back of the seat. I'm not 100% sure but I think that's it. I need to tape it and then do a round of test drive.

Knock the shell on the back of your seat and see if you hear some noise coming from inside the seat.

I’ll give that a try tomorrow. I did try opening those tonight to see if that helped but it didn’t. I’ll try tapping the back of the seat tomorrow to see if that helps. Also going to try getting a friend to hop along with me.

This is just so frustrating as I love everything else about this car. But my brain can’t let go of annoying noises like this

I think it's because the cover has too much gap in between the track.

Glad to know I'm not the only person who has this issue :-)

Rattling annoys me so much. My prior Volvo was in the shop 5 times because of it and it was also the reason why I sold it.

Not sure what market you’re in but if your car has the electonic tow option, check to see if the tow bar is loose. Fast forward to 4:15 to see what I mean.

I'm in the US, so I'm pretty sure I don't have that option.

Ok I just tested and unfortunately it’s not the seat. It’s something on the roof-liner or window. I’ll need to take the car in. Ugh.

Mine has the same problem. I can't tell where it's coming from. I thought it might be the rear window sun shade.

I don't have the rear sunshade, so I know it isn't that

I don't like the word guinea pig. I'd say Beta Testers!

I thought so too. I thought it could be the "handle" of the sunshade hitting the window frame. I put the sunshade down and the rattle was still there....

Going to be setting some time with the dealer up soon to take a look at it and give their take. Given that i dont have the rear sunshade, I know it isn't that. I didd close the sky lounge cover though and that didn't have any effect. I did have a couple of friends pinpoint it to the back area though, at least.

That said, I'm seeing that those of us with the issue are all in the Midwest where we've had temperatures get quite chilly lately. I know I was mostly noticing this issue at night and when it was colder out. Wondering if it is a temperature related thing?

Please keep us posted! It's definitely on the back side. I feel it's something on the roof-liner but I knocked the roof area and couldn't hear anything...

I had a rattle on the right side of my car. I thought it was the passenger seat but it turned out to be the metal seat belt buckle hitting the plastic b pillar. It comes back from time to time depending if I have a passenger or not.

The seat belt rattle against the B-pillar is pretty common in BMW for some reason.

Just tried and it’s not working for me

It’s further back and feels like something higher

I noticed a rattle the other day. Closing the "sky lounge" roof shade stopped it. Now to take it to the dealer to get it resolved
