M Multifunction or Comfort seats for a new-to-order-X5 M60i?
Dear Bimmerpost
I'm just about to order an M60i in the X5 guise (X6 design not my cup of tea, plus rear seat comfort and boot space are meaningful to me) and I wanted to hear your view on whether or not the M Multifunction Seats (I'll refer to them as "MMSs" further) are the ones to go for I'd appreciate your views on: 1) any seating height difference between the two options (I either imagined it by myself, or heard from a dealer, that the MMSs are mounted slightly lower than Comforts and thus allow for a very slightly lower seat in the car (I am coming from a 7 series, and really want to avoid seating too high up) 2) any loss of rear leg room with the MMSs vs Comforts. The MMSs seem very big on the pictures and I'm worried this also means they're beefier (in depth), thus making the rear occupants have less space for their feet/knees 3) any loss of comfort for the people in the seats. I heard the side bolsters on the seat itself are a bit stiff an can't be adjusted, which may make them uncomfortable on long journeys (can't move/shift your legs as in the Comforts) I've done some searching on the forum for the above, but haven't found my answers... Apologies to annoy everyone with yet another "help me choose ... " thread

Switching from a ‘20 X5 with comfort seats to a ‘22 with multi functions: I didn’t notice a seat height or space difference. Initially I thought the MMS seats were stiffer and less comfortable, and I fussed with the seat controls more during the first couple of thousand miles. Now that they’re dialed in, they’re as comfortable as the comfort seats were with their easier adjustment. I’d order the MMS again, especially since on long drives I’ve benefitted from ventilated and massaging seats….

comfort seats can also be optioned with heating and ventilation. As the name suggests, they are far more comfortable and adjustable than anything else in the range, I personally wouldn't buy a BMW with anything else.

The thing is, as far as I know, the MMSs have the exact same adjustment possibilities as the comfort seats (eg including separate tilting of the upper part of the seat back). Also, same as the comfort seats, they can have the ventilation and massaging options (had massaging on my 7-series and I used this no more than 10 times over the two years of owning that car / 30k miles; not taking this option for the next car; same with the ventilation, but I don’t have a way to skip this option considering how packages are set up in Poland)
So, essentially, I’m thinking if the MMSs are detrimental to comfort seats in any material way. On the flip side, they add a lot of visual appeal (to this beholder at least)

Depending on the choice of interior you may not have a choice. On the X5 xDrive40i I'm Spec'ing out if I choose Tartufo extended merino leather the Multi-contour seats are mandatory.

In Poland, where I am ordering the car, this limitation doesn’t apply. Comfort seats are available in all upholstery colors. The MMSs can be had only in black Merino (extended or full) and tartufo (only full). The “full” merino option adds alcantara headliner and full leather on the dash and center console
