Anyone keep a jumper starter pack in your car? Where do you keep t?

Reason I ask- currently keeping it in the trunk near the spare tire compartment, but figured if the battery actually did die then there'd be no way to access that compartment since you'd be unable to open the tailgate.

So...the manual release above the rear license plate does not release the trunk latch if the battery is compromised?

Correct me if I’m wrong, if your battery is dead you can still use the manual key to access the front door, then back door, fold down the back seats and get any charger equipment? Bit of a PITA but still do-able?

True, guess I never thought of that, although I prob would have to ask someone smaller than myself to do that LOL

This is what grandchildren are for, though they can quickly outgrow this kind of task.

It is the same problem with getting them to sweep chimneys. Eventually they get stuck and it is necessary to employ a professional chimney sweep to get them loose again.

In 33 years of motoring, I can count the number of times I have needed to be jump started on one hand.

Given the infrequency of the need, surely the jump start pack will have lost its charge rendering it useless. I would say that a set of jump leads would be more useful to carry with you.

We carry one in each of our vehicles in their bags/cases. One is in a soft case, that is placed in a pelican case - all are slipped under a seat on the floor usually with a scanner. Used three times - each time to help someone else. They also would serve as power banks if we were stranded - I see them as an essential part of my winter kit here in Canada but are in the vehicle year round. They hold their charge - a top up or two is all that's needed.

I have a similar experience, but in some counties with more remote areas, severe weather, and much greater distances involved relative to UK, I’d probably go with a starter pack. Just because it may be more problematic to find another vehicle in a reasonable time to use jump leads.

Maybe in rear door poach. Out of curiosity, what's your startpack?

Use a small Imazing Jump Starter, after a sitting for 1 year it loses only about 4% of it charge. Has a builtin flashlight/strobe and several changing ports for phone etc. BMW fob included for size comparison.

I'm surprised at some that say they've left them in the car for long periods of time and they only lost a bit of charge. I figured they would lose charge quick if you leave them out I the cold.

Edit: Did a quick search and basically every result says you will deplete and/or damage the battery if you leave it out in freezing temps.

These are LiIon, so they don't suffer memory effect and self discharge that much. Yes, freezing temperatures are bad, but that's the point of this device, isn't it?

I have almost the same one as ContactPatch plus a tire compressor , plug kit, and tools. All fit inside the spare tire and the side pocket back there. I actually have two compressors.

I’ve only needed the battery jumper once and it was for someone else’s car lol. The tie plug kit is a different story.

And yes, it barely loses charge sitting back there , although we don’t have freezing temps ever in miami, but it does get hot. I am more worried about it catching on fire somehow than losing its charge lol

Pretty much what I do as well. Needed the jumper pack a total of 3 times in 4 years, all to jump someone else. Still, given where I travel in the winter, I wouldn't be without it. I give mine a maintenance charge every 6 months and they've been fine. I have a duplicate setup in my wife's car.

Has anyone found an answer to whether the tailgate can open if the battery dies? I'm not sure if it's an electronic or mechanical lock.

Has anyone checked their owners manual (or the manual embedded in iDrive) to see if there is a way to open your tailgate manually without electrical power?

But still check your owners manual because there may be a way to manually unlock the tailgate from the interior.

Looks like the G01 X3 does not have a lock cylinder on the exterior of the tailgate...only the electronically actuated pad (S29). You can see the only two manual lock cylinders on the car (the driver's door and glovebox?).

(tailgate only has an electronically actuated button (S29))
