Newbie 30e questions

Hello!

I've recently ordered a BMW X1 30e plug-in hybrid (Europe) with the M Sport package, Premium package, and Harman Kardon premium sound system. Delivery is expected in 3-4 months, giving me time to make any necessary changes to the configuration. I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate your insights:

1. Is it possible to charge the battery using the engine, or is charging limited to plugging in and regenerative braking? How efficient is the regenerative charging ?

2. Is there an option to maintain the battery charge above a certain level, like 30%?

3. In your opinion, is the head-up display worth an additional 4k, or do you consider it more of a luxury than a necessity?

4. How does the car connect to the internet? Does it use its own mobile network connectivity, or does it require a Wi-Fi hotspot from a mobile phone?

5. Can the mobile application remotely start the car and activate the A/C on hot days? Also, does this feature depend on internet connectivity, meaning it's only usable in areas with a network, like my garage?

6. I've learned that the vehicle's computer reserves battery power for use at low speeds during trips, particularly favoring electric power in urban driving after highway travel. Does this intelligent battery management work exclusively with the BMW's built-in navigation system, or is it also compatible with third-party navigation apps like Google Maps via Apple CarPlay?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Quote boupas,

1. Is it possible to charge the battery using the engine, or is charging limited to plugging in and regenerative braking? How efficient is the regenerative charging ?

: The engine can’t be used to charge the battery, the braking recuperation is minimal and will only add a very minimal amount of power.

2. Is there an option to maintain the battery charge above a certain level, like 30%?

: You can maintain the battery for using later in the journey but this has to be done by hitting the maintain battery icon at the desired level ie you can’t set it to a specific level.

3. In your opinion, is the head-up display worth an additional 4k, or do you consider it more of a luxury than a necessity?

: I got the HUD as part of the tech pack but I think personally if I had to pay 4k for it I wouldn’t have added it.

4. How does the car connect to the internet? Does it use its own mobile network connectivity, or does it require a Wi-Fi hotspot from a mobile phone?

: The car has built in Wi-Fi. Don’t know if this the same for all markets.

5. Can the mobile application remotely start the car and activate the A/C on hot days? Also, does this feature depend on internet connectivity, meaning it's only usable in areas with a network, like my garage?

: Yes you can pre condition the car via the app or you can set it in the iDrive to come on at a set time. As for starting the car remotely that is market specific and cannot be done in the UK.

: This I believe is only available when using the BMW maps. I haven’t tried the others so can’t be 100% on that.

1.the engine DOES charge the batterie. Not just on braking, but when the brain inside decides to. Its a very inefficient way of charging. As both axis are physically connected by the road, it only charges by rear axis producing more drag. May be the brain does this when ICE is underloaded, which is also good for ICE long life. BMW does not release the logic behind.

2. As answers above.

3. I am more than happy with Hud paired with navigation, and driving assistant plus.
Cost/benefit is a personal choice. Suggest you testdrive one at dealer, with HUD and DA+.

4. Spain versión has permanent internet. Does not require mobile. And that is how your MyBMW app can connect and send commands from afar.

5. In Spain you can remote pre condition but no remote start. Car must have its own data coverage in the garage, so if its a bunker....no way. And your mobile too OFC.

6. Thats the theory. It needs an active route on built in navigation (BMW, not Google/waze).
On long journeys i prefer to do my own managing, toggling on and off "the keep battery level" so i have enough battery when i want (usually the urban area of arrival city)

Just wondering, if you choose to keep the battery level at a certain percentage and then decide to floor it, does the rear electric motor kick in for extra power, or does the car prioritize keeping the battery at the chosen level?

You have full power available.
It will just regen more once you lift pedal, to compensate.

Personally, I think a HUD is a must. I hope 4K is in a package. If it is available as a separate option, it will cost around 1K. Actually, I can no longer do without a HUD and the dark cockpit philosophy may have to be extended even further. I think the displays can be turned off or even removed.

Yes, it's part of a package that includes the following:

- BMW Head Up display
- BMW Live Cockpit Professional
- Parking Assistant Plus

Actually the price is 2k more for these options, so maybe it's worth it after all.

This was the package in the Netherlands at introduction for a little over 3K all worth.

It's the same package in Greece and it costs a little under 4k (3900€). Some of these options though overlap with the Premium package which I've already selected, so it's 2k more for the 3 options I mentioned in my previous post.

This Innovation package is also a prerequisite for the Driving Assistance Professional.

In my opinion, the HUD is a little disappointing, much like the HK sound system. It is not crystal clear; rather, it is a bit out of focus. For example, my wife's new Citroen C4 HUD has excellent visibility and sharpness for half the price of a car. I would say that the HUD is usable, but if it were a separate option, I wouldn't choose it.

I think you need to get your HUD checked out. My HUD is very crisp and bright. Zero complaints

I will definitely mention this to my dealer. Regarding the electric range, with a fully charged battery, I drove around 35-40 km in wet, cold weather (1-2 degrees above zero), which is half of the advertised range. Despite this, the experience of electric driving is phenomenal.

I have a few questions:

1. Where can I find engine (ICE) temperature? I see RPMs when I select Sport mode, but no engine/oil temperature.
2. How can I identify iDrive version?
3. Is it possible to somehow lower a window a littlle bit while opening a door and close a window when I close a door just like on coupe cars? I'm used to that from my old F34. Now I have to slam a door if all the windows are closed.

Thanks and best regards

1.Go to home menu - then when you click on the Live Data you can change to adaptive content and will see the sport view + oil temp .
There is NO Water temp

2 - BMW APP

3 - NO thats only for coupe cars.

That is an option, I agree. But I'm using comfort access, so I barely use my actual key.

If you go into the BMW Guide app and type in the search imprint you will see it at the bottom under Version.

So long as you have your key on you if you touch the grooved part on the door handle with your finger that should close the window according to the manual.
