my X1 in the garage turned on and off by itself for 20 seconds while nobody was home?

we were in a hotel 4 hours away.(about 1700 miles) Nobody was was at home.

I woke up a couple of hours ago when the Ring app on my phone alerted me to motion inside my garage. The video below showed that the X1's light turned on for less than 20 seconds, made a few click and whining sounds, then turned off the lights again. The BMW app showed the car as locked.

The exterior videos Ring cameras showed that nobody was near my house. both key fobs were in the house, but on the opposite side. the camera that pointed to my cat's bed in another room showed him sleeping at the time, so he couldn't have grabbed the key fob from the top drawer and walked towards the garage.

Come to think of it, I remember it happening at least a couple times in the past. probably nothing, but it is most puzzling. what can possibly cause it to do that? Going to call my next-door neighbor later and ask her to go into my garage to take a look around anyway.(she has my house key and garage and security codes)

I did wonder if the Lyft driver who took us to the airport last night went back to rob my house. He was asking a lot of weird questions about my house.(like if I had Ring cameras because he saw them outside of my garage... guess I need to hide those cameras better) I ended up just acting dumb and telling him that it was my friend's house and my lazy friends didn't feel like taking us to the airport.

I would guess something like a flight from Toronto to Calgary is roughly a 4 hours and about ~2,000 miles...

But yeah, why the double post spacex. Talk to the dealer

I have no idea what kind of rocket it was, but the ticket said "United Airlines"? (and no, United does not have cabotage rights within Canada)

just had my neighbor go into my garage. she said the lights were all off. she got the key fob and started and stopped the car, then locked it. nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

I'm going to test this when I get home.. I have a Wifi 6 mesh router right next to the X1.(literally less than 2 feet from the left fender on a shelf... it's there so my Ring cameras outside of the house can get wifi) I wonder if maybe being in such proximity is causing the X1's system to pick up random signals?

The ticket may say "United" but that plane says "Untied". I'd be very leary flying on it.

Have you checked in the My BMW app, there is a "Remote History" option where you can see any remote commands sent to the car. Would be interesting to see if there is an unlock in the history around that time.

Thanks! I didnt' even know that it was there. Upon checking, there was no command sent to my X1 at all. The last one was when I locked it just before leaving the house to go to the airport yesterday.

I learn something new here almost every single day!

Thanks again!

I’ll have to mess around with my wife’s vehicle tomorrow but early on with ownership, my wife use to play around with the security cameras remotely during the day and I recalled seeing the X1 wake up and take 360 degree pictures. However, I do see you didn’t use my BMW app though so maybe something else.

It happened again this morning.

I decided to text the question and the video to my service advisor. He replied just now with the following:

"Dear Mr. **********, please bring both key fobs with you the next time you come in for service. Calvin said that it could be related to a fault with one of the key fobs. In the mean time, he suggested that you keep the key fob as far away from the vehicle as possible to see if that makes a difference. Have a great trip. See you soon!"

one of my key fobs must have become self-aware and started walking around the house!

I remember reading about how newer BMW fobs power themselves down after a period of inactivity. It prevents relay attacks or something? My uneducated guess is that the movement sensor inside the key fob is going cuckoo and turns itself on and off randomly and causes the car to think that the key fob is coming towards it.

Of course, my dealer being almost 3 hours away, (knock on wood) I probably won't have to go there again until April... but at least I got them to document this anomaly in their system.

The only similar experience I've had is with my digital key (and I'm in the house). My phone will show lock/unlock/lock/unlock/lock/unlock even when I'm pretty far away from the car (but still inside). I've had to restart my phone to stop this from happening. Did you notice anything on your phone (apple wallet is what notifies me) even when you were away?

they originally replaced one key, but somehow that caused the 2nd key fob to stop working. I went back to the dealer and they couldn't make the 2nd key work. Something about the tech messing up the programming when they replaced the 1st key? In the end, they had to replace the 1st key(the replacement) and the 2nd key at the same time. The replacements have been working fine so far.

update: barely 2 months after the dealer replaced both key fobs, the same issue appeared this morning.

I was sleeping in my hotel room 2500 miles away. My phone started beeping because the Ring app detected movement in the garage. (nobody home like the last time) It was only just before 5AM. My garage was dark... then the video showed that the X1's parking lights came on and off 3 times. I have one key fob with me. The other key fob is in my safe in the house, in the room farthest from the garage, about 70 feet away.

I started looking at the Ring app videos. Nobody inside or outside of my housed, based on the footage from all the cameras. Apparently the X1's parking light came on and off randomly at least 6 times between 11pm and 4am. Each time it only came on and off 1 to 3 times. The BMW app showed no activities... it showed all doors as closed.

Guess it's another trip to the dealer once I get home next week.
