B58TU heavy oil consumption!!!! HELP PLEASE!!
My M440i burned 2 quarts of 0-20 within 3k miles on the oil, I did beat on it 90% of the time tho.
What’s concerning is I switched over to 5W-30 and it burned a quarter/almosthalf of a quart within 500 miles on that 5w-30 oil.. I also have a Oil smell in the cabin, no smoke out the exhaust, and no smoke out the oil cap when I take it off. I’m lost. |

Don’t be alarmed. Two quarts in 3k is not unusual for the B58. Many people on the forum have experienced this, including me. I have to add two quarts between every oil change which I do at 5k miles.
As to the half court. That may just be the oil level reader giving inconsistent results from day of oil change to when you performed the next test. Maybe some settling. It’s not exact every time. But close enough. I can’t comment as to the smell. But if there is an oil leak somewhere there should be some signs. Oil spot on ground or somewhere else in engine bay. |

I checked for leaks, there’s none whatsoever. Just a smell of burning oil that’s fairly strong and hard to miss. And I burnt thru 5w-30 which is honestly insane imo. 0w-20 is understandable but 5w-30?

I own a shop lol, I know these have oil consumption but the smell was throwing me off so I checked for leaks with the car on the lift. There was nothing. Not a drop. Besides the diff leaking which is pretty common and was just a few drops.

My 2020 M340i has been from the East Coast to Utah. A couple times in 100 degree Kansas temps. It's been through Deals Gap, and Colorado mountains several times. Some spirited driving, but no abuse.
The oil has never fallen below full. |

Also have a 2020 M340iX. Damn near zero oil consumption. Maybe a 1/4 liter between oil changes which run about 5-6k miles. Currently have 55k miles on the clock. Tuned since month 2 of ownership. Had it nearly three years now. And I’m not always “nice” with how I drive it. Nowhere near, as a matter of fact.
As for the consumption of 5-30, I’d highly recommend staying away from increasing oil weight to combat consumption as it can increase friction and thus, wear. A friction modifier/additive package is more appropriate for your issue. |

oil burning on the b58 end of story/
it was a trade off that BMW had to make when they increased the compression ratio of the b58 to 11.0:1; it is near s54 levels of compression which did the same amount of oil burning. has to do with the design of the piston rings which would allow a certain level of seepage more so than a lower compression motor. |
