Is it stupid to buy a Diesel BMW in 2024 in CA??
Hey there! My last car was a 2014 328d wagon and I absolutely loved it. I sold it 2 years ago before I moved to Europe. Before that I had an audi a3 TDI and also loved it. I prefer diesel but now that I'm back in CA and see what they are trying to do with trucks I am scared about the future prices and re sell of a Diesel car now.
I found a sweet 2017 328d Wagon I'm just reluctant to buy it because of how lame CA has become with D cars. If anyone can speak on this or knows what the future for normal Diesel cars in CA will be like it would be of much help! Thanks So Much, David |

Hi David, There are enthusiasts like you out there who seem determined to keep driving their Diesels forever. I owned a Diesel Sprinter van for something like 17 years and loved it. I was tempted to pick up a BMW Diesel some years ago in the E90 era but did not as I wanted a wagon.
I usually recommend Bimmerpost as the best BMW forum, but Bimmerfest at bimmerfest.com/forums has a pretty active subforum dedicated to BMW Diesels. Check it out.

I think you’ll be able to enjoy your 328d wagon for many years. ICEs, gas and diesel, will be around a lot longer than CA wants them to.

Laughing my *** off... CA believes they can do away with Diesel for the movement of commerce/goods!
Yeah, and I got a Bridge to sell them too! Get the Diesel and don't worry about it... |

They will not outlaw and prevent you from buying/selling a used vehicle. Even the crazy Audi Diesel-gate recalled vehicles can continue to be owned and driven without any modifications.
Diesel is by far the most dominant fuel available. It powers literally every commercial vehicle as well as every commercial backup generator found from McDonald's to your local hospital. California isn't looking backwards they are focused on future auto sales for regulating. |

Well your market is nationwide. California won't ban resale of diesels. The bigger issue is going to be repairs as these cars age.

I had a diesel BMW Touring / Estate from Sixt for 11 days in Germany, Austria and Italy back September and loved every minute! The MPG was incredible and it was very peppy in the mountains. Even with 4 adults and full of luggage.

Idk why it would matter? Legislation is typically post dated, meaning any anti-diesel legislation would make it impossible to buy new diesels. If anything, that would make the used diesel market stronger.
Buy what’s best for you and don’t try to predict how/what the govt will do… I have an e70 x5 35d and I love it. 154k miles and it runs really well. Great road trip vehicle. 23 mpg day to day. 28 mpg on road trips. Loads of torque, and mine is totally stock. Delete and tune really wakes these up, but I haven’t seen the need… |
