Cool I added a subwoofer and here is feedback

Do it. I added an audison active 10-inch sub into the underfloor storage, and now the car sounds better than the Burmester in our e-class cabriolet and as good as our x7 m50 in theatre mode (which is my favourite). It really does improve the sound quality alot once you tune it correctly (it was too much bass at first, but i tuned it to my favourite songs). And it somehow works with the inbuilt bass-slider incase you find its too much bass! it cost 1500aud, fitted, installed and tuned and is a 10/10 recommend install if you feel like bass is an issue.

The only downside is that at low volumes it can feel like the bass is coming from the back of the car, but at 50% (i used to max vol in order to vibe, but 50% is the sweet spot that i enjoy all my music from different genres) because the bass harmonises with the surround sound.

I have this lying around that I self installed on my previous 4 series. It was great in there and presumably would sound just as good in the X1, I’m just too lazy to run wires from the front to the back lol. Most likely I’ll be putting it in my new daily driver instead since the install is much simpler.

This sounds really intriguing. I'm happy with the sound quality for what's there but could use some more low end thump.

What did the installation process involve? Did it wire into the existing amplifier or did it involve installing additional hardware? Also how did you get power to it? Was this with the Harmon Kardon speakers or the base model?

Great use of that storage area! Would love some install details. Mainly how you ran the audio from the head unit and power.

basically the sub i mentioned has a built in amplifier, so nothing extra was neccessary, i paid a shop who proffesionally installed it into my car, which has seen many german cars so i have no clue i have a picture, its wired from the right inside the spare wheel area

I'm about to do the same. trying to find the biggest subwoofer that I can fit down there.

Unfortunately, the U.S. X1 has a spare tire and tools in the boot. I plan to leave the spare in the garage and get a BMW mobility kit.

Do you happen to have the part number of the BMW mobility kit that came with your X1 in Australia?

Thanks!

What was the exact model of your sub? I want to make sure that I am looking for the right one. Also, do you think it would fit in the PHEV variants of the X1, since the underfloor boot space is much smaller?

My unit came with the most basic sound setup from factory. Went with focalinside speakers and the Audison Prima 8 inch woofer (fits nicely underneath the trunk). This is powered with MatchUp 8 DSP (sorry no pics for this). Vast improvement over the disappointing stock system.

Hi Tazz,

1. Do you know where they got the power for the active subwoofer? Did they stretch a wire all the way from the battery in the engine bay?

2. Where is your subwoofer getting its signal from? Hi-level input from stock speakers? Did they tap into the wiring of the original underseat woofers? Or is there somehow a way to get a signal directly from the amplifier?

If you have any pictures, that would be a massive help.

TIA

Underfloor storage in the PHEV is ~7cm (height) where the floor is raised. Towards the trunk-door, the height is 20cm, and the width is ~23cm. It is unlikely you will be able to fit a subwoofer there.

There are a few flat-body (underseat) subwoofers I have seen on the market that have a height of ~7cm. However, with that there is absolutely no gap left top/bottom of the subwoofer.

sorry but i have the non-PHEV where i have much more space, (which increases the air a subwoofer moves to get that bass thump), 7cm is not going to be enough given how far away the speakers are, since i sometime regret not buying the 12inch (which is bigger and deeper)

1. yes i believe they did but they may have taken in for the 400w amplifier for the H/K system (not really sure about the HK tho)

2. yes it is hi-level input from stock speakers, given the size (and budget) limitations i chose a subwoofer with a built in amplifier so my answer is yes but really no?

just to note I have the subwoofer pointed up (even if this causes cone sagging) because it rattles the trunk and loses oomph if pointed down (maybe the underfloor is thin???)

I'm curious: why did you opt for a separate sub instead of upgrading the woofers under the seat?

Regarding the title of this post - doesn’t the feedback hurt your ears?

I upgraded the under seat woofers as well. Wanted that additional bass, the Audison woofers surely delivered.

Woah wait, an upgraded subwoofer is available to replace the OEM HK under driver's seat woofer? Tell me more! Are their options aka more than one? Can you link the Audison brand one?

Thank you so much! I didn't think this was available and I've wanted since day 1.
