Sport Seats vs A Big Guy

As an old big guy (6'2", 260 lb, 79 years old) about to buy a 2024 X1, I'm having a hard time deciding whether the sport seats are a good option for me. During my 30 minute test drive the SS felt fine but that isn't at all like a 300 mile road trip.

Does anyone with any of these deterrents, or perhaps has a friend who does, have any advice regarding getting the Sport Seats option?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

I'm not a big guy, but this is my 2nd BMW with sport seats, and I don't think I'd want one without them. I love them. If they were comfortable on a 30 min test drive, I would think that's a sufficient amount of time to confirm their comfort.

Im a fairly big guy and find the sports seats superb I though my previous car a Lexus had comfortable sports seats but the X1 Sports seats are superb. I wouldnt be without them and a great value too.

If the Sports seats are fit you in the BMW showroom Id highly recommend

Specifically, which sports seats are you referring to? The new M Sport seats (with the light up M logo) or the normal sport seats (with adjustable headrest)

The normal sport seats are very comfortable and provide better support, for your body especially during turns. However, you may find yourself wanting a little more room for your thighs over long drives, since they do hug the body more than the comfort seats.

At the end of the day, it depends what you value most in your seats: comfort? Looks? Support?

If you value comfort above all and want a little more freedom for your legs and shoulders, then comfort seats are the way to go.

If you prefer a more snug fit for better support and placement of your body in the seat, and/or prefer a sportier look, then the sport seats are the way to go.

I'm also 6'2" and rather large. I have the M Sport package with sport seats(Alcantara surface). The longest nonstop trip that I drove in my X1 was about 560 mile within 1 day. (with 3 stops, one for gas and two for lunch/dinner) I was perfectly comfortable when I arrived at my hotel. No backaches or anything. My sport seats do have the optional Active Seats with lumbar support and massage function.

The taller/deeper lower bolster do make getting in and out a little harder.

You didn't mention if you tried the sport seats for the regular X1 or the special sport seats for the X1 M35i. The M35i sport seats are different and I dont' have any experience in them.

Tell your BMW salesman about your concern. Maybe they have a loaner X1 that you can borrow or rent for a full day so you can drive for several hours? Or perhaps your local Sixt car rental has the X1 for rent? Just because me or others say it's comfortable doesn't mean the same will apply to you. Seats are like shoes, pants, shirts and gloves... only YOU can decide if they are comfortable enough for the way you drive.

The car I drove was an xDrive28i xLine but there was another xLine in the showroom with the regular seats and with the Active Seats option.
My wife and I will be at the dealer tomorrow, I'll be sure to sit in that one too. Plus my wife may prefer one over the other.

I'm sure I wont be needing the Sport part of the seat, I'm pushing 80 and I got that phase over years ago when I was into Hill Climbs, Autocrosses and Road Rallies. I am purely into comfort now.

Thanks for reminding me that I would have to deal with a high bolster. That alone should be enough to make my decision.

Speaking of Sixt, my son had a BMW X7 reserved but ended up with a loaded GMC Yukon Denali. That monster sold me on Surround View.

Every person who sat in my X1 loved the Active Seat's massage function. It basically just inflates/deflates the lumbar support up and down, but feel nice on a long drive. I have a friend who turns it on immediately when he gets into my X1..... even if we are only going from his house to Taco Bell a mile away.

Frankly, if I'm buying the X1 X-Line, I'll choose regular seats with Active Seats option.

I've always planned on the Active Seats since I'm used to 4 way lumbar, even my CRV has it but it's not very active.

Thanks for your help.

I'd spend some time in an x3 before buying the X1,
I weigh 160 about 6 0. I like the seats but they are tight.
And the heated, non movable part of the seat is smaller than any car seat I've ever owned.
Much smaller than the 1st gen X1 or old X5
The thigh bolster is larger on this model and it's not heated
Just my 2c

I’m 6/4 but 180Ilbs, and love the M sport seats in alcantara. However they are firmish and after 300 miles you do start to need to fidget a bit, but then there are not many cars in this class that would still be totally comfortable after 300 miles. The X1 is not gonna be as comfy for long distance as the class above say the X3, which feels much more like being in a comfy chair. The smallest SUV have their advantages, such as nimbleness but they do have their drawbacks too.

I'm 6' and 180, and I love my sport seats. Very comfortable, just the right amount of snug around the bolsters for my taste, but on longer drives not having the lumbar support does affect my back a little. Nothing that a little shifting in the seat doesn't help, but driving for a few hours continuously (basically me driving around the island once) does require a brief stop to stretch a little. BUT, I also have lower back issues and really poor posture, so take that with a grain of salt.

I have lumber and active massage and my back is much better now than years ago BUT after 3hrs I still need to shift around a little. Not uncomfortable as such but definitely not as comfy or nnlong drivew as the X3 seats but that also may be because of the X3 suspension and ride height. To be honest though not many cars after 3hrs don’t require some shifting about to alleviate the back muscles. Certainly on 1hr trips there is no sense of feeling even slightly uncomfortable so long as you like firmer sports seats. It’s a very personal choice and each individual should have a sense after driving for 10+ years of which camp they fall in. Firmer side bolster seats or softer lower bolster seats. I’ve always been in the first camp and actually find softer lower side seats uncomfortable for my back.

I used to like sleeping in soft mattresses with big pillows. When my new house was finished by the builder last year, I could not wait to move it. It was totally empty. So I grabbed a couple of blankets and a pillow and went to the house that very night. I slept on the carpeted floor. Strangely, I woke up so refreshed. Then I realized that my body somehow loved the hard floor(even if it was carpeted) I ended up going to a mattress store and ordering their firmest mattress. Have been sleeping on it ever since. Never slept so well.

My point is that now two people like the same seats and mattresses. Trying them is the only way to figure out which works best.

Not to mention that the OP probably has an extremely long drive from Wales to America? Or is there a city in the US named Gwynedd?

Completely but yes there's a Gwynedd in the US. It's an unincorporated community in Lower Gwynedd Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania

66yrs old, 6'4" 205lbs and a bad back
  • I miss not having a lumbar adjustment
  • seats are too narrow keeping my thighs close together
  • difficult getting out
  • having the ability to lengthen the seat pan is a plus, but the portion that extends is not the full width of the seat, so pointless

I do find that after 2 hrs of driving, I'm squirming. But I keep telling myself this isn't a X5

I am 6ft and 170lbs, 32" waist and I don't like the sport seats I have. It is kind of cool to be held during sharp turns. But the side of the thighs rest between the seat and the bolster and the bolster side pressure is simply not comfortable. As I tend to spread my legs a bit open during drives, I start feeling the pressure on the side of thighs. It is more irritating than painful.
I don't see much value in the lombard support and back massage option I have: these inflating bags on the back are just awkward. I minimized the settings of the feature. The different types of massage are ridiculous. I never use it.
On the upside, the adjustable thigh support is great. That was drove me to choose the sport seats.
All in all, a bad but not horrible choice. I still love the car though, but I think about the seat every time.

one thing that I do want to mention is that the sport seats are kind of nice to nap in, even for a large person like myself.

I took a very nice 1-hour nap at a service area on the NJ tpke during a long 8-hour road trip. When fully reclined, it was kind of like sleeping in a cradle?

I honest thought that SEPA was for Single Euro Payments Area. I was thinking "wait, UK(Wales) never joined the Euro area so it wasn't in the SEPA... but the guy also put a Welsh town as his location?" Also contributing to my confusing was that I happened to have a stash of about 600 to 800 1-euro and 2-euro coins on my table at this very moment. Trying to get them sorted and exchanged/spent somehow. My father passed away and we found those coins in his stuff. Apparently whenever he returned from trips to Europe, he never bothered to spend the coins, so they became a large stash over the years. I already took care of the 300+ British one-pound coins by giving them to a friend who went to London last month.

Apparently in addition to BMW knowledge, Bimmerpost is also a great place to learn about geography!

Yes, I live in the Southeastern corner of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Gwynedd is a Welsh word and a county in north-west Wales, ironically one of the larger villages in my Gwynedd is named North Wales. There are a lot of Welsh place names in my Montgomery County. Sort of sounds like you're in Britain, I blame William Penn. William Penn slept in even more homes and Inns in the area than George Washington. Those two guys really knew how to get a free meal and board.

Now it's both geography and history, I feel like a schoolboy again.

I would buy an X3 in an instant if you could get one with Adaptive Cruise Control. I've had ACC for 7 years and I will not do without it. I've been stalking the X1 since January of 2023 but ACC just started showing up on dealer's lots in the last couple of months. I plan on buying one in a few days. I just need to decide on seats and wheel size. 18" wheels seem right for our roads which were probably last repaired by Billy Penn.

Thanks for the opinions,
Bob

I'm working with Julianna Brancato at BMW of Fort Washington.

I live 6 miles from Fort Washington aka West German BMW and 8 miles from Thompson BMW. I usually get my E46 330Ci cabrio (with a manual ) serviced at Fort Washington because it's a prettier drive.
