All 50e owners - let's get some data
As we all know, there is a bias on forums when it comes to problem reporting. People are much more inclined to seek out a forum and tell folks about their problem than they are when they are trouble free.
The problem rate for the 50e seems unusually high compared to other model introductions but that could just be that bias being amplified. In order to try and get a better sample of owners I'm hoping that members will respond here if, and only if, they meet one of the three criteria below:
For this purpose, we are going to consider an issue to be an instance where you received a CEL, Drive train error, etc. whether or not you went to the dealer to have it handled. When responding if you could post the following that would be very helpful:
I will update this post periodically to reflect the data collected. Of course this will not be a truly representative random sample of the entire 50e owners group but it should at least eliminate the bias of coming to a forum due to having a problem. Of course there likely will be some bias against posting but we can try at least. Thanks for your help with this. Here is the most recent data aggregation: I should note that I only counted an issue if it was CEL, Drivetrain, charging or battery related.

Joined forum before purchasing 50e
August 2023 production date, purchased in September Currently at 6000 miles One CEL caused by a faulty charging port which was replaced last week under warranty at the dealer |

Joined forum on Feb 3rd, 2023.
Week 15 build and picked up car on April 25th. CEL and Info screen acting up in August. App 2,000 miles driven, now at 5,200 No loaner so I didn’t take it in till Sep 7th. Expansion Valve Stuck / Fixed Software error on head unit found / updated software to 8.5 and no issues since Got the car back 3 days later. Since then, CEL has come on several times but goes away after restart. Absolutely LOVE the car and would buy again without a second thought… |

Joined the forum prior to getting their 50e
May 1st week build. Around 8000miles: Battery cooling valve stuck open. - Replaced. Around 14000miles: 48 volt something- Program upgrade. All issues were safe to drive and not urgent. |

Joined after purchase but before delivery of 50e. Had multiple issues over the course of the first few months of ownership. Received a trade assist identical 50e in November. CEL went on last week. I have an appointment on Monday to get it checked out. Hopefully minor, but this has all been very frustrating.

Joined before purchased Oct'13 2023, prod date Nov 16, 2023, collected Dec 4, 2023.
CEL at ~120miles with the 120V gfci outlet tripped while it was charging, went away on it's own after driving a couple of miles. Notified the dealer, but didn't take the car to get diagnosed. BlueDriver either didn't work properly, or if worked, gave U0100 error code. Driven ~1000miles, no issues so far beside that CEL. |

Joined before getting 50e. No issue so far, 2,600 miles, over 2,000 miles in EV mode.
I went to the dealer to complain about lack of vibration absorbers. They ignored me in typical BMW way. I came to conclusion that it was not worth to spend time on this. |

I joined the forum before getting my 50e.
About 800 miles in, I got my first CEL. Over the next ~1000 miles I received two more CEL's and two Drivetrain Malfunction warnings. Both CEL's cleared on their own two days later and both Drivetrain Warnings cleared one their own (one immediately and one after parking and restarting). I went to the dealer all four times and they have updated software, reprogrammed the vehicle, and replaced the BMU. I hav had other minor issues with the vehicle as well: - Frequent CarPlay disconnects that were solved with an iDrive update by the dealer - Excessive road noise, though not as bad as others with larger wheels from what I understand - Too many rattles for a luxury vehicle |
