I use Millers diesel power ecomax (shit name!) all the time. Car runs nicer on it, and I think it gets slightly better mpg... Tried a different additive recently and thought something was wrong with the engine! Very happy that switching back to ecomax sorted it out.

The BMW fuel additive is made by Chevron. So it’s cheaper to buy the larger bottle of Techron fuel additive for the same price or cheaper than what BMW charges.

I do this every 3000 miles. I used it in early December before a long holiday road-trip. I averaged a bit over 27 mpg for 2500 highway miles. Seems like it is doing something good.

Why not just fill up at Chevron? That is what I do.

I can’t think of one Chevron station anywhere near me. We use Shell exclusively unless there’s an emergency low fuel situation (Shell station is 10 miles away). It rarely happens but when it does we use the Crown station (only other station is Liberty) in our small isolated town.

Snake oil, unless existing issues after xxxx mileage. Same as any modern non-carb’d engine. Same folks that use similar crap, IMO, are the same that refuse to acknowledge all top-tier fuel comes from the same plant in the same truck, while loudly yelling, “but, but, they put magical additives in ‘their’ fuels”, (yet don’t do basic OA?). I’ll stick to H‑E‑B, Costco, Sam’s Club, AM/PM, as I have for forty years of driving, and will only consider any form of fuel injector cleaning upon an issue arising. Across multiple brands/engines & multiple 80-100k+ runs, never had a single issue. BMW engines are no different. (There’s a reason no manufacturer actually recommends anything, only stealerships, conveniently not covered either). 98% of the time it’s a money grab. To each their own though, hell, I follow 5-7k OCIs with routine oil analysis, so, yea. We can all spend where we deem it useful. /shrug.

There’s nothing in that bulletin about BS aftermarket additives. It clearly states to prioritize the usage of Top/Tier fuel, (as most manufacturers have done for two decades). Not sure what you think you’re disproving or proving?

You talked about using all kinds of gas, most of it not top tier, and then said, “no manufacturer actually recommends anything…”, leaving the impression you are of the opinion BMW makes no recommendation regarding top tier gas and they clearly do.

Try reading again, as that’s clearly not what was said. What was said was people refuse to acknowledge fuel comes from the same place, (ask anyone who lives near a storage plant and watches the delivery trucks come & go to the various ‘name brand’ stations), and while virtually all of it meets the definition of ‘top tier’, (which is a whole nother can of BS marketing), people refuse to admit there’s no proven difference between any of the majority brands. (Ie; Chevron vs Shell vs Exxon bullsheat). And every fuel retailer I mentioned does meet those BS ‘recommendations’, you just may not be familiar with all of them, (which admittedly could be regional).
My argument is about the snake oil of unnecessary additives, and was quite clear on that, albeit many choose to believe a BMW engine is more advanced than any other, thus requiring it, when it’s clearly an excuse of a money grab, (again, hence why not a single manufacturer to my knowledge recommends nor requires such), in 95% of circumstances for the normal life of an engine. If others want to believe otherwise, that’s their performative, as I also stated. E; imo, a better use of money to ensure future reliability would be a routine Oil Analysis, (which oddly so many are anti), as well as an occasional scope every ~25-35k miles. But, that makes sense, so, /shrug. |

Gotta love those with a lack of reading comprehension skills and love being internet warriors. Just as the poster immediately above you, claiming only one of the brands of fuel I randomly tossed out was ‘top tier’, (despite his own link proving him wrong, as AM/PM - which is Arco, Chevron, Exxon, Shell, etc are all clearly listed).
There are those who read something on bobistheoilguy or some crap, and will forever defend an insane position, and those who choose to not believe marketing hype and ‘sponsored’ programs like Top Tier, or not to use dealer/manufacturer oil, instead opting to perform routine OA or FA on their own vehicles. I’ll opt for the later, as I don’t like being a sheep. This thread is as useful as a “What brand of oil is best” thread. |
