trans or engine made loud metallic thud noise 1/2 second after car came to full stop?

I was driving to Outback to pick up dinner last night. It was about 7 miles away and I drove normally. Weather was cool and dry.

After I stuffed the food in the trunk, I got back on the highway. At the next red light, I came to a complete stop slowly behind a few other cars. A little less than 1/2 second, later, I heard a very LOUD metallic thud sound coming from below the car. Couldn't tell if it was the engine or the transmission. The car did vibrate a little at the same time. The sound was definitely metallic, like two hammers hitting each other.

When the light changed green, I continued driving and detected nothing else. At the next traffic light, the car made the same loud noise again. I didn't think it was the transmission changing gear or letting off the clutch. The sound didn't appear until the car was fully stopped, like the previous one.

I pulled into a parking lot to lookin under the hood and then under the car. I didn't see anything. There was nothing on the screen to alert me to anything. I turned off the engine and restarted again. There wasn't anything unusual as far as I could tell. I drove home. During the next two traffic lights and stop signs, it didn't make the thud sound again.

Drove it again for about 40 miles this morning and the sound never happened again..

Should I have the dealer check it out just in case? I can't replicate the issue, but the sound was captured on my dashcam.

Update: decided to call my service advisor. apparently it wasn't the first time that they've heard of this issue. they will come to my house tomorrow to have the car towed to the dealership. I was told not to drive it.(not even pull it out of the garage) I declined the loaner that he offered to have the tow truck bring... don't really feel like driving 3 hours to the dealer to pick up the car after they do whatever repair is needed.

That sounds not good.... I'd definitely call the dealer and try to email them the clip so they can hear it

turned out that they didn't even need to hear it. the service advisor seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. (not sure if that's good or bad)

I can't believe the fantastic service you get from your dealer, I can see why you keep going back there despite the distance.
the 530i is not replacing the X1. It's replacing an aging Mercedes E-class sedan.

My Mercedes and Lexus dealer(also almost 3 hours from me) provide similar services.

For US$82 roundtrip, the Mercedes dealer will dispatch a flatbed to take my Mercedes to the dealership for maintenance and repairs.

Before Covid, the Lexus dealer does this for free, but only up to 40 miles from the dealership.(they send a valet driving a loaner to your house and drive your Lexus back to the dealership... and in the reverse order when service is done) Not really useful for me, since I' way beyond that 40-mile limit.

The BMW dealer only does it for stuff covered by BMW warranty, but I assume that BMW pays for it, not the dealership?

Back when I lived in DMV, the Lexus dealer(Lexus of SS) that I used provide free pick-up/drop-off for all services, with a 20-mile limit. After I bought the Lexus, I never went there again in person, even for routine oil changes, since they always picked up the car.

What's the production date of your car??

Sounds like a known transmission problem. When you talk to them ask if something they fixed with a running change or correction

3/2023 was the production month stamped on the car.

Currently has a little over 4,000 miles.

It happened to me last night in my driveway- the techs, the sales people, and their genius knows very little about these cars. Gonna drive it til drops. I trade my cars in every three years so will not worry about it unless I get stuck

you mean the sound that I described?

oh well... I knew it couldn't have just been my X1 that made the sound.

The flatbed truck just showed up about an hour ago. The service dept actually marked "Do not start engine" on the vehicle pick-up order that the truck driver had.

I helped him roll the X1 out of my garage and down the driveway. He then used a winch to pull it up to the flatbed. It took him another few minutes to strap everything down and he even used the tow hook to secure it. Gotta love tow truck drivers who really care about the cars that they are towing. I asked him how much it would cost if I had to pay for the tow myself. He said it was at least $200 each way.(based on distance)

Hopefully I'll probably hear from the service advisor later this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

Please let us know what they say was the cause.

Have you been driving it lately or did it sit for a few days?

Can you try to activate the remote start just for a laugh?
or maybe it will do it it's self like it has done before.

BTW: How did you manage to roll it without starting the engine did it go into "N" and Electric Brake "off" without?
I just opened the BMW app and it couldn't connecting to anything. nothing responds and just shows connection error. I assume that they must have plugged the car into some kind of diagnostic thing? or simply disconnected the battery? come to think of it, must be some kind of safety thing, to prevent customers from accidentally(or deliberately) remote starting the car from a phone.

I have no idea about the neutral, but the tow truck driver got inside and put it in neutral somehow. Pretty sure the engine wasn't running because I was pushing it from behind. Once out of the garage, the car just kind of rolled down the driveway by itself, until he stopped it just behind the tow truck.

It was a serious issue as I had a gearbox/flywheel failure on an X3-F25 left me stranded in the middle of the road having to dial 999. Electric failure on an X1-F48 did the same but on the driveway and the recovery bloke had to put it on a trolley to shift it.
I got curious and called the tow truck driver. He said the engine was running when I was pushing. When I asked about the do not start engine note, he said it was just to make sure that the car was not driven. According to him, there was no way to put it in neutral without the engine running, unless the tech puts it into some kind of service mode.

Oh.. and I just got a text from the service advisor:

"Dear Mr. ____-___, we just completed the diagnostics. The tech will perform an extended test drive this afternoon. If everything looks good, you can come pick it up around 5:30PM or we can deliver it back to you tomorrow morning"

That sounded suspiciously like "we don't see anything wrong and can't figure out what's going on, so you can drive it.. until something blows up!"

Thanks for that... I'll be sure to test it when I get my X1 back tomorrow morning. The flatbed will be bringing my X1 home around 10AM tomorrow. If it's the same driver, I'll teach him how to put the X1 in neutral without the engine running.

Yes, the service advisor just called and said the tech was "very satisfied" with the test drive. They found no fault. Apparently they even went so far as to check the transmission fluid on the DCT. I didn't even know the DCT fluid level could be checked. Even if something does happen again(hope not), at least now it's documented in the service history. One thing that he said to me again was "try to drive it more" The last time I was there, he was not happy that I only put on about 40 miles during the entire month of October.

I'm wondering if they have kept my X1's battery disconnected because I still cannot use the BMW app to access it. Unless they updated some software in the car causing the disconnection.

The car was just delivered back to me a couple of hours ago.

Just a week ago, I had driven around 970 miles over 2 days.

The service advisor said that all they did was diagnostics and test drives, but everything "looked good" to them.

They did wash and detail the car, even washed the undercarriage because I had a ton of salt or dried up brine down there from last week's driving in DMV.

No idea if there is any similarity to the original post, but when I had my 2016 M2, they were notorious for making knocking / clanking sounds when stood still.

It happened to me quite a few times and spooked me, but I then read on the forums it's normal behaviour for M transmission (maybe something about the M differential locking / unlocking???).

I know the X1 is a completely different car, but the OP did remind me of it.

the service advisor mentioned checking some pressure level sensors in the transmission. not sure pressure of what? AFAIK, transmission fluid is not pressurized, if the DCT even uses that. then again, I have absolutely no idea how BMW's DCT works.

It was a 2016 manual.

Great car......probably the best drivers car I've owned.
Kept it over 4 years from new.

But it would make occasional loud sounds, which was quite common.....
