Stress Cracked Windshield

Just discovered a stress crack in our 2024 X7 lci. Curious if anyone here has had the same thing happen, and if so were you able to get BMW to cover it, and how?

What speed were you driving? Usually speeds above 160 mph stresses the glass but don't break. And the new cars are capped at 120 and 140 for m60i . My guess is you had a small crack you didn't see which spread during high speed or huge pit hole. Just my guess

I would say if you look closely along the crack you’ll most likely find a small impact point from a rock/etc and the crack itself started due to expanding/ contracting due to temperature changes.

I take it you didn't get the windshield insurance at closing?
Wheels and Glass are the two I always spring for.

What does it look like on the outside? Is there a impact point or not?

Haven’t had it over 90 mph and we are not aware of any rock impact. I didn’t get the BMW glass insurance but my auto policy covered it. Just had it replaced today for $3,000 and the tech said there was a very fine impact point near the top edge of the glass. In my 45 years of driving, this is the first time I’ve ever had a cracked glass.

I just picked up TWO chips in my windshield. 63 and never had this happen. What is the best way to fix this? Auto GLass company or go to the dealer. I spoke to a glass company and they said they just remove and replace the glass without touching any sensors so there's no need to go to the dealer...

May consider the dealer as there are cameras and sensors in the center console that attaches to the windshield. A few posts about that in this thread.

I saw that thread and subsequently did go to a dealer, which is why it was so expensive. What surprised me is that they had the glass for my LCI in stock!
