How is distance control implemented?

Did a few hundred miles yesterday on I-95 and got to experiment more with the crews and distance control.

I like the distance control but I'm wondering how it is implemented on the X1? Is the system actually applying the brakes each time to back off from the vehicle in front or is there some sort of deceleration of the engine?

If it's the brakes, I can see where that might prematurely wear the brakes versus manually backing off on the accelerator when using cruise control.

almost all adaptive cruise control use brakes. the increased brake wear is probably very minor, unless the driver uses cruise control in heavy traffic.(which seems silly to me) I only use it on the interstate with very light traffic.

How would it be any different than if you were doing it manually? If there's a safe distance, the car can ease off the accelerator to slow down; if a car cuts into your lane, the brake may need to be applied.
