Unsettling "lane departure warning" with "steering intervention"

Beware of leaving "steering intervention" on in "lane departure warining" when you drive on snowy/slippery roads.

I was driving in such conditions recently and got scared by the car correcting what it was perceiving as leaving the lane.

The road was a secondary mountain road, with lots of curves and slightly covered by snow, alhtough car tracks were simply wet/dry. I guess the car had hard times reading the road.

The car started waving on the road as if it was trying to throw itself into a tail spin. Had the road been really slippery, this could have been a dangerous situation.

While enabling "steering intervention" might be a great safety feature in good road conditions, it can be unsettling.
Watch out for this setting.

Yeah, sometimes it gets confused by intermittent snow on the road. If the snow coverage is solid it seems to ignore it.

I set the system to low, as it's not as intrusive and will be there for when i forget to turn it back on.

Not just in the snow. Seems the steering intervention gets confused easily. If road markings are worn, it can get confused. In my area we also have some pretty non standard lane markings at some intersections and off-ramps, and the car will try to pull off to one side. Some off ramps if I’m in the right lane it’ll try to steer the car off the freeway when I intended to go straight. I’ve adjusted the intervention in the menu so it’s not nearly as forceful.

I guess this is why there is a "shortcut" to disable "lane departure warning" (or whatever the name) when you click on the driver assistance button in the central console...

After I removed the steering intervention, the ride was normal.

I think there are 2 settings. One is a warning and the other is for correction or, intervention.

I'm pretty sure you can set the intervention to off and the warning to low.

Yes, you have a setting for the level of warning ("enhanced", "dangerous situations", "off"). This makes a green (!) lane indicator flash, and the steering wheel vibrates (if the setting is on).

You have a separate on/off switch for the steering intervention that brings the car back into the lane.

This intervention works well on normal roads when the lane is read correctly.

The problem I had was that the steering wheel intervention kept on repeating over and over, making the car zig-zag in the lane. Had it been only one, it could have been OK. But the repeated intervention was nerve wracking.

I figured out that turning only the steering was OK, and I turned it back on in the mixed city/higway roads where I lived.
