supposedly my xDrive28i got 41mpg on a 161-mile 2.5-hour nonstop drive, how was it possible? BMW's specs show only 34mpg highway.

started from a Shell gas station near Potomac Mills, trunk fully loaded with tons of heavy stuff of from IKEA... and went south on 95, for those familiar with the DMV area

I don't know if this is just my imagination, but it seems to get better highway MPG whenever I have extremely heavy stuff in the trunk.(monthly Costco hauls, for example).

I experienced similar with my 2021 X3, which was rated for 29 mpg on highway, but occasionally I got 36+ mpg (also with a pretty loaded trunk). I noticed it performed best when the route was mainly flat/limited climbing and minimal traffic.

I did however get worse than the rated performance for city driving, due to traffic I assume.

I have seen some very high mpg values when driving in the cold or high elevation when skiing . I just assumed it was wrong.

I just got 35.3 Philly to DC and back, and that was driving 75-80 much of the way (first time ever not hitting traffic in either direction!!).

So I bet if I could force myself to drive 55-60, I could definitely hit upper 30s or more.

In my experience, the average gas mileage in the app can be different from the one in the car, which can be different from the one you would calculate based on mileage and tank refill volume.

In January, the app was telling me my average gas mileage was 31.6mpg, while I was tracking 30.4mpg based on the car "since last refuel" numbers.

Recently, I made 2 long trips with lots of highway. On the first one, the app says 37.4mpg, the "since last refuel" numbers were 36.5mpg, vs 35.7mpg manually calculated. On the second one, the app says 32.2mpg, the "since last refuel" 30.1mpg vs 28.6 calculated.

that's true... although on this trip, I started counting right after I filled up at a Shell gas station, so the actual number matched what the app said.

it's very possible as the B48 is a ridiculously efficient engine

the 330i which uses the same engine gets 48 mpg highway
