X1 would have been totaled by red light runner today, but was saved by a Toyota Camry

I was turning left on green today. There were two left turn lanes and I was in the lane on the left. On my right, there was a Toyota Camry. We were both following the other left-turning cars.(along with a couple dozen other cars following behind us)

A speeding blue car(indicated in the first photo) had the red light. The driver did not even attempt to slow down. I saw it coming, but there was not much I could do except continue with the left turn. The gold Toyota Camry on my right wasn't so lucky. The blue car slammed into the right side of the Camry. The crash was loud and pretty much destroyed the Camry's right side. I got away unscathed.

If the Camry wasn't on my right, my X1 would probably have been totaled today.

As if that wasn't enough... just 20 minutes later, 2 miles away(in the 3rd photo below), I was coming up on another intersection. Two SUVs and a Dodge Charger crashed into each other right in front of me. I watched as the front airbags on the two SUVs deploy. By sheer coincidence, there was already an ambulance on the other side of the intersection waiting at the red light. The ambulance driver immediately turned on his flashing lights and got behind the 3 crashed cars.

Thanks! I'll give that a try next time.

Although... would it have helped in my situation where the other driver ran a red light and didn't even slow down?

Front and right cameras would have recorded your advance left traffic light and the crash… with the Camry defending you it’s highly unlikely any of the collision warnings and evasion assistant would have activated

Yikes! That's crazy...... maybe you've driven into the Upside-down!

Do all x1s have multiple cameras? I've only seen the rear view displayed

It’s a feature if you have the surround cameras and drive recorder. Holding down the parking camera button for a few seconds next to the engine start button will start the recording process starting with the 30seconds before you pressed the button and the 30 seconds afterwards (if setup that way in your drive recorder settings). Supposedly it can also be triggered using the voice assistant as well but I haven’t bothered to figure out what phrase triggers it.

I haven't enabled that shortcut yet so can you provide a screenshot? Also, not familiar withe the GTA feature. What is GTA?

Thanks in advance.

In iDrive 8 at least, it’s much quicker to just hold the parking camera button down for a few seconds to start recording(the physical button on the armrest console). The drive recorder shortcut on the swipe down menu will launch the app, but then you have to then press record on the screen to start recording.
Not sure if it operates differently in iDrive 9.

that feature would have been so handy when I was in Florida a few years ago. I went to one of those bikini car washes and one of the employee's bikini top fell off. She didn't realize it until I acted like a perfect gentleman and alerted her.

You can hold the drive recorder app button until you are prompted to add to shortcuts… I use the shortcut so I can choose which usb flash drive to save to in my front two ports

Or like FlashMonkey929 hold down the parking camera button but only records 30 seconds

From what I understand, the video is being recorded all the time in the background. Then, when the camera button is activated it will save the 30 seconds prior and the 30 seconds after the button was pressed or in the event of an accident. Is that a correct summary?

When you stated earlier " I swipe my drive recorder shortcut every time I drive" I thought that meant it would record and save video continuously while you drive with no 30 second time limitation. Is that possible if the option for manual USB recording is enabled?

Yes to both
My 128gb drive can hold 14 hours of drive recordings (all 4 cameras) without over writing old recordings. Every time you activate drive recorder (to USB) it will show how much recording time is available. You cannot view or delete USB videos on the X1 display… only externally-on a laptop or phone

Thanks for that info. What USB stick are you using? Is it a right-angle one that can stay out of the way and can it be inserted into any of the USB ports?

Thanks. Ordered one and will get to test it out this week. I forgot to ask (and I don't see it mentioned in the manual), what's the option to "export raw data" (fisheye)? How is that different than recording or downloading (exporting) to a USB drive?

The footage output from the cameras is corrected to provide a less distorted view if you don’t have the “export raw data” feature checked. With it checked, the footage is completely unaltered and very distorted like a fisheye lens.

does this Samsung USB-C flash drive get warm?

I've been using a Sandisk 128gb USB-C flash drive for music files. While it works fine, it gets awfully warm(almost hot) when the car's stereo has been playing music files from it. That's why I'm considering getting a Samsung one to see if it's cooler.

thanks!

I only remove this tiny flashdrive when I want to view and or delete recordings … it’s cool to the touch at the end of my trips

On a side note the tiny flashdrive cover fits in conveniently in that tiny front tray inside the center armrest storage

Got to test out the USB drive (64gb Samsung) with the drive recorder today.

I set up a shortcut and did a test drive around the neighborhood. For some reason the rear camera video stopped after about 30 seconds into the test drive. The front was fine and the side cameras did not record at all. I double-checked and have all cameras selected under the manual USB option. Perhaps a glitch so I'll try another test later in the week.

I also tested the standard record option which worked fine. However, I started to download it to the USB drive and it was painfully slow. It appeared like the 1-minute video would take at least one minute or more to download fully.
