Apple maps IOS 17.x battery drain when connected to CarPlay
I noticed that Apple maps drains the iphone battery when the phone is connected to carplay, even if the app is not used for navigation.
I tried to disable location and background refresh completely, no difference. I uninstalled Maps and used Google Maps or Waze and the problem disappeared. At least, Google Maps or Waze are only using the phone battery when used through Carplay. I reinstalled Maps and the problem came back. I disabled CarPlay in the "mobile devices" app and the problem disappeared. During a recent trip of 8 hours, Apple maps used 31% of the phone battery whithout my using it. I did a search and found some similar complains about IOS 16.x: https://discussions.apple.com/thread...=5&sortBy=best Is anyone else seeing the issue? Last edited by PatL; 02-14-2024 at 11:45 PM.. |

Not sure if this will solve battery drainage, I too have noticed that by 7pm my battery goes to "low power mode" and it never used to do that. |

I updated IOS to 7.3.1 and the problem still exists, unsurprinsigly since there is no mention of CarPlay in the release notes.
Looking at the pictures tells a lot, for 3mn of usage Maps used 37% of the battery, while MyBMW used 14% for 1h 52mn. |

Just found this thread. I’m having the same issue with my new iX and an iPhone 15 pro. Even when not using maps (or anything really) in CarPlay, the phone shows maps eating up battery.
Did you ever find a solution to this? |

With the latest update 03/2024.40 there was no improvement. In fact, the Apple CarPlay integration is worse: Spotify hiccups are more pronounced, and doesn't pickup where it was left off upon starting the car. Sometimes Spotify gets stuck completely and doesn't play. Right now, I have re-subscribed to Digital Premium and turned CarPlay off. When I need it for Waze (gas prices) or Google Maps (general smartphone use), I turned it back in the Mobile devices application. |

My old X1 didn’t support CarPlay and I’ve been looking forward to it so I could use Apple Maps. But, the new maps in iDrive 8.5 are so much better than what I had, that I don’t see needing Apple Maps most of the time. |
