ID9 CarPlay fix/ improvement
Hello all,
Like many others on this forum, I’ve expressed frustration with ID9 and CarPlay cutouts in my X1 M35. I was messing with some iPhone settings the other day and stumbled across a potential improvement. I still have occasional issues but I’d say they’re now 5-10% of what they used to be. All other ID9 issues aside it makes CarPlay at least usable… Would love others to test and report back. In another thread a couple users have reported improvements. Here’s the process: 1.Remove current phone from car entirely 2.Reset WiFi password 3. Pair phone again, making sure to do as many commands on the iDrive screen as possible including selecting “use with CarPlay”. (Not sure about this but this was a hunch from a service guy) 4. The big one: In your iPhone WiFi settings, find the WiFi network for your car, select the info button, scroll down and toggle off “Limit IP address tracking” in addition, try turning off “private WiFi address”. That’s it. For some reason after toggling that setting off I’ve been able to use the phone without audio cutting out and without CarPlay completely crashing on phone calls…. Before I toggled this off my CarPlay would crash almost immediately after making a phone call. I heard maybe one audio cut out in 45 minutes and prior it was much more frequent. As you test, please also document the iPhone model, software and Idrive version. I’m going to make BMW NA aware of this thread. iPhone 12 Pro 17.3.1 IDrive 9 07.2023.72 2024 x1 m35 |

Just use CarPlay through Bluetooth and it will work much better. Even in my M2, the Wi-Fi/hotspot works like shit with with CarPlay. The last Apple update made it worse along with the darker display.

How do you designate it through Bluetooth? AFAIK wireless CarPlay requires WiFi

I have WiFi turned off and bluetooth on my phone on. Does your Wi-Fi need to be on for all of your other stuff to work?

I’ve been having the CarPlay drop out too. It happens infrequently when I’m just driving. But it happens almost every time I’m on a call and using Apple Maps.
I also hate that every text or notification from any app brings the screen back to CarPlay. Lastly. I’ve noticed the startup time on iD9 has slowed down quite a bit. Not sure if there was an update that did this or what. |
