Automatic locking

According to the manual the vehicle can be set up to automatic lock via iDrive:
Apps menu / "Vehicle" / "Doors and
windows" / "Lock" / "Locking and security" /
"Lock after a short time"
The vehicle locks automatically after a short
period of time if no door is opened after un-
locking.

Does anyone have an idea what the short period of time is? I would think 10 minutes would be about right. My wife was out shopping today and came back to the car and the people she was shopping with had already opened the car while my wife was still in the store with the keys.

I have this set but so far the vehicle does not automatically locked itself. I have the keys inside the house fairly far away from the garage.

If you unlock with the fob and never open the door, it relocks in 30-45 seconds.

Well that's kind of useless. My old X1 had a setting where it would lock after a certain period of time so I assumed that was the purpose of this iDrive setting.

Why is it useless? It's a safety feature--you hit the unlock button on your fob, but you get distracted or accidentally hit the unlock button, or for whatever reason, you don't get in the car. It relocks so you don't have an unlocked car sitting there. Every car I've had for the past 25 years worked the same way.

If you exit the car without proximity locking turned on, it’s not going to lock itself. If you want to walk away and it auto locks without hitting a button on the fob you need to enable that in IDrive. This is a separate feature from what you describe.

The auto locking feature you described above is if after unlocking the car and there is no door that gets opened it will re-lock itself. In other words, it is assuming you didn’t mean to unlock the car and will lock it in case you didn’t realize.

IMO that scenario is not common. More likely, you forget to lock the vehicle after parking and the vehicle then self-locks for safety (just like the prior X1 did).

The situation I'm describing is a feature that was previously available for a situation where you may forget to lock the car after parking.

As far as I can recall, my ‘23 has never had that. This is the only options I have for lock/unlock:

I'm not referring to the MY23 model (ID8).
ID9 has the same options except the verbiage shown on the right side of your first screenshot is not included on the ID9 screen.

The previous capability I was referring to was on my 2014 X1 (E84) so it seems like that is no longer a feature offered.

I know you’re not referring to the ‘23. I was merely giving more info about my car for reference. I don’t have ID9 so I’m not sure what the differences are, and anyone referencing this thread will have a clearer picture. Yes, it does seem as if the feature was replaced by proximity locking, as I had the feature you’re referring to on my previous 3 BMWs.

Common or not, every car has the auto re-lock feature.

I have a '14 328 F30, which has no feature anywhere close to that; only the auto re-lock if you don't open the doors soon after unlocking. Heck, my F30 doesn't even have auto unlock when you put the car in park; you have to code that.

Forgive me for using your post, but I’ve just joined this forum and can Reply, but cannot find the place to start my own thread. Can you or anyone else give me a clue? I need to find out why my X1 will not unlock. This only happens if I have just locked it and try to open it again soon after, like if I forgot something in the car. Most of the time it’s fine, but occasionally it will not open that second time. Fortunately I was able to open it with the digital key in my phone. And of course, it worked perfectly when I brought it to the dealer. Same thing with my Sirius radio presets disappearing as a default and having to return them from the media screen. Thank you for the use of your space.

Locked Out! And Presets Issue

My 2023 X1 has a problem of locking me out occasionally. It only happens if I’ve just locked it and immediately try to unlock because I had forgotten something in the car. Even if I wait a few minutes, it’s still locked. However, once when I waited a hour I was able to get back in. Alternately, I have been able to use my digital phone key to get in, but I don’t want to have to depend on this. Since it doesn’t happen all the time, the service department has not been able to help me because they can’t duplicate it at the time of service. Any thoughts?

Additionally, my car has Sirius preset channels that get kicked off, putting me back in a non-preset state. This is more an annoyance than anything else but if there’s a reason this is happening that I’m not aware of, I would appreciate any feedback or advice. Thank you.
