X1 - remote control parking

I’m returning to a subject I raised when I got my car…. The BMW handbook app updated, refreshing the how-to videos adding the remote park show and tells….

But it appears to still be just BMW toying with me, the pdf doesn’t list it in the index and the app doesn’t have a button.

The wait continues… driving assistance pro.. all the hardware is there just let me have the software to make life in the narrow parking bays easier please…

The X1 does not have and will not get remote control parking. This is part of the parking assistant professional package (got nothing to driving assistant professional package), which is not available for the X1.

You are right that when you order an X1, there is only Parking Assistance Plus, but Remote Control is referenced in driver's guide app (based on my VIN) as available with Parking Assistance Professional. I see that for other models its a purchase/subscription from ConnectedDrive Store, so maybe as ID9 updates progress, they may add it as an option in the future?!

It might be added as an option for the LCI X1 when it comes out, but it is very unlikely to be an add-on option for current X1 models as the feature isn’t only software related, but also requires additional hardware.

This is similar to the difference between driving assistant, DA plus and DA pro. You can add features via OTA purchases up to DA plus, but features available for DA pro are not available via OTA purchases as they require additional hardware to be installed in the car. This is also the reason why BMW sells three different variants of the mirror caps; even though they look identical on the outside, internally, they’re different to accommodate for the additional hardware of DA plus and DA pro

Well, my config has all 4 360 degree cameras (besides the forward looking one in the rearview mirror and rear one), side ultrasonic sensors, radars... I wonder what else might be needed.
I think this is also exactly the difference between DA Plus and DA Pro - it can follow lane with front radar + rearview mirror front camera, but for lane changes it needs side mirror cameras and front bumper one.

You might be right, and it could be that all the hardware is available. But think about it this way: BMW doesn’t even offer remote parking to the 3 or 4 series, so why would they offer it to the X1? They purposefully leave out higher-end features for their more premium cars.

If I were you, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the possibility that this will come to the X1.

I don't see BMW giving this to the lower end models. Remote parking is more of an issue for the larger cars and I think they will keep this as one of the differentiators.

Annoyingly my boss’s Kia sportage has forwards and back remote park in out of space…. Tesla does it for basic summon, and even jlr on some models.

I don’t want it to drive and pick me up, just go forwards and backwards in a straight line the length of the car….

Agree it’s probably not coming, but the video is annoying toying with me. I think we should go for a class action lawsuit for emotional distress.

There is a mention of remote control parking through a smartphone in my user manual, but also caveats of limitations of availability depending on market, options, etc.

That’s interesting! My manual doesn’t have this section (iX1; idrive 8), which would also make me think that this might come as an add-on feature later on. However, I still think my previous reply applies: bmw would reserve this for their bigger/more premium cars (5 series and above).

That being said, your screenshot does mention “market availability”, which makes me think that this might be coming to the Chinese market. Since they got the longer U12 X1 chassis, this makes me think that this would “grant” them the remote parking option (it’s mainly because of market power rather than the extra few cm in length)

Nonetheless, it may by some miracle come as an add-on (probably for iDrive 9 only :/) in the future. If it does, please keep us updated! Very curious

Hi guys, I've also noticed that Maneuver Assistant & Remote Control Parking (parts of Parking Assistant Professional) sections now appear in X1 Owner's manual editions since X/23. I asked at the local dealership earlier this month while ordering X1 xDrive30e, but they didn't have any info regarding this topic. We made configuration based on build specs available from June 2024 and there was no option of Parking Assistant Professional.

I think all your points are valid - whether this option will be reserved for higher end models at first, come together with X1 LCI or just become available later as an option or ConnectedDrive upgrade even for U11, should all the prerequisites be met (Comfort Access, Parking Assistant Plus, compatible head unit, iDrive and My BMW app version, national market...). And maybe BMW just wanted to simplify maintenance/updates of owner's manuals with generic "Parking" chapter applicable to all models with notes on availability/applicability. :-D Without insights from people at BMW, we can just speculate.

Cheers,
M

You’re right about simplifying the manuals as I now see the trailer assistant in the manual and animations even though I do not have this on my car

Hi guys,
FYI - model update measures for summer 2024 bring Parking Assistant Professional option into the configurator:
https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/globa...or-summer-2024

Also should be possible to add it later for compatible models/equipment:
"The functionality of the Parking Assistant Professional can also be downloaded over the air from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store as part of BMW Digital Premium. This is possible in cars specified with BMW Operating System 9, BMW Parking Assistant Plus and Comfort Access. "

Cheers,
M

Yet again, early adopters miss out on new features…what a joke!

Really annoyed by this!

I wonder if it’s possible to complain about this to our local dealer with any realistic positive outcome… it’s a new car and we already got screwed over so many times…

technically it is not a "new" car anymore.

the X1 has basically been out for 2 years already.

3rd year of production(2025 model year) is about to go into production in July. 2024 model year cannot be ordered anymore.

That means the U11 X1 LCI will be here in about 2 year or so.(summer of 2026?)

basically, time really flies.

True, but I meant in the sense that early adopters (bought within only 1 year of car release) got screwed over because it seems bmw is no longer prioritising/adding these features for iDrive 8. That’s what’s so frustrating. It’s not like bmw developed iDrive 9 overnight. When they released the X1/iX1 they already had the plans for iDrive 9. They should have incorporated the upgrade for all X1, or at least keep providing these additional features to iDrive 8 users

Why release a car and make its software redundant within 1 year of its release…

Truely hope this is real.

Even the "stop for red light" is kinda working for me even though it says it only provides information in my country. If I confirm a red light on approach, the car will slow down and stop 🤯

While I'm sure it's different depending on your conditions and area you drive in, I for one am not too bothered by not having any of these new features considering all the headaches iDrive 9 users seem to be having with the software. Most of these assisted features are not very useful to me. The road markings here where I am are so degraded or inconsistent that even Lane Keep Assist would be useless. I do wish that lumbar support was available when I purchased the car though.

I’m the opposite 😂 I have lumbar support, but have only used it twice. I use land keep assist, lane change, all the time on the highway. I’d love to have comfort exit and play games/watch YouTube whilst charging.

Remote parking would also be amazing as many parking spaces in garages in the city centre are very tight.

I’m hoping that it will come to iDrive 8 at some point, too…

I don't have much faith in BMW in releasing any new features to iDrive 8 at this point. The X1 has been a good mini SUV for me for work, but I'm starting to get bored with it. I miss sports cars, so most likely my next car will have iDrive 8.5 unless they announce something for the 2026 model year.
