Catless smell

Guys who are running catless, how heavy is the smell and is it tolerable? I have ran catless on various platforms and feel like every car has been different. Curious to hear peoples takes on the G87.

When you get rid of a cat, usually it doesn't smell any more. But you'll likely be sad

I disagree, you will definitely get some type of smell, the degree and amount would depend on the engine and exhaust system.

The smell depends on how accurate the tune that is applied is in handling closed-loop operation. My Caterham was delivered as a factory car in 2012 with no cat, as the specific regulations it was sold in Canada under didn’t require one.

The idle and half throttle and below operation to 5,000RPM are all closed loop and accurately hit Lambda 1.00 +/- 0.02, giving no noticeable smell. Full throttle to 8,200RPM tapers to 0.86 Lambda under open loop Alpha-N conditions (high compression naturally aspirated engine), but combustion is complete and the car is moving at speed under those conditions, so also no detectable smell.

The smell is certainly noticeable. you will almost always get a question about it every time someone rides in the car with you or stands nearby the car when it's on idle.

This is really good to know, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, this is my concern. Not sure if it is worth it. Seems like performance isn't too impacted but I'm really adamant on a deep throaty sound. I've been looking to couple catless downpipes with either AA stainless steel single midpipe or Akropovic titanium catback. 1st world problems...

Why not go with the catted option? you still get the better airflow, deep throaty sound without the smell or the check engine light

Think your right, this seems like the most practical approach.

Are you keeping the secondary cats on the midpipe? If so you can run catless with very little smell but we also have a 200 cell option that will greatly reduce it however it will pull a little sound volume out of the equation as well..

I have been planning for no secondary cats although ideally would like to run catless DP with full catback. Is there any way to minimize the smell of catless DP without secondaries? Would the right flash tune make this possible?

Just so I understand you want to run a fully catless system and you want to know if there is anyway to reduce the smell using a tune?

The s58 is not the smelliest engine out there so the smell won't be unbearable by any means however there will be a smell when idling with the windows down and on. When cruising I really don't smell it much.

Adding a tune would only help if the car was running slightly on the rich side to begin with.

If smell is a concern keep the stock downpipes or our catted 200 cell downpipe. Alternatively you can run catless downpipes and keep your secondary cats.
