why can I unlock and open the doors even when remote is far away in bedroom?

my X1 doors will automatically lock and unlock when I approach or walk away from it with the remote in my pocket. that I assume is how it is designed or as part of the premium package?

recently, I found something very weird with this function. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to do this, but I don't know what is causing it yet.

it happened again this morning when I went to the garage and exited with my dog for her daily walk. when I came back, I wasn't even thinking and I walked towards the locked X1 to get some wet wipes. I lifted the door handle and the X1 beeped and unlocked all 4 doors. That was when I realized that it was locked to begin with. The X1's remote had been in my bedroom since last night. I did not have another remote or my phone with me.

why is it allowing the door to be unlocked and opened when the remote is so far away and sitting still overnight? had I parked in the driveway, a random person could unlock it as well?

That's strange, I've never heard of this happening before. To unlock the doors by touching the inside of the handle, the fob should be within a few feet of the car. BUT, if you have proximity unlocking enabled, that should have triggered first.

My phone is actually much closer to the garage. It's on a counter in the kitchen, but that's still a good 50 feet away.

I just locked the car again and placed both remotes and my phone in the basement. Will try in a few hours to see if I can go to the garage and unlock the door.

Are you using the bmw card by any chance? And is it in your wallet, which is likely in your back pocket?...otherwise, no idea

I had that thought too, but I don't think the car actively transmits and is NFC only, so I think you have to pretty much be touching the receiver in the door handle with the card.

well what is the proximity of the bedroom to the parked car in the garage? is your bedroom above or next to the garage?

Where is your extra key? If it's not that, id suspect that it's the proximity of the phone or one key that's allowing the car to Sense your body nearby

the regular remote key that I use sits on top of a drawer as indicated above. the 2nd remote key is in the bottom drawer below.

after I posed the question earlier, I locked the doors and placed both remotes and my phone in the basement directly below the kitchen area.

just went to the garage and I was still able to unlock and open the driver's side door, which also opened the other 3 doors at simultaneously. guess I need to go into the iDrive settings to see if there's something I missed or inadvertently changed?

Perhaps the distance isn't far enough between the fob and vehicle and the vehicle still detects the fob?

The fob should go to sleep after about 40 seconds of not being moved so I can’t see it being that.

My 2024 x1 28i does not pick up key fob signal when I leave key in house 25 ft away from garage or driveway.

no, my mobile carrier will never support Apple Watches(with cell data), so I'll probably never have one. (and I also don't want to switch to T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon)

Judging by the diagram and details you provided, something seems strange and I'd probably take it to the dealer. Comfort access is not supposed to work like that. For the proximity locking and unlocking, it is only supposed to do so at a distance of less than 20 feet, mine is usually within 10-15 feet to activate it. For regular comfort access, the fob must be on your person within a couple feet of the receiver for you to unlock the car by touching the handle. Not to mention that if you have proximity unlocking enabled, the car should have unlocked by itself before you had to touch the handle. I have had the odd occasion where the car didn't automatically unlock before I walked up to it and had to touch the handle myself, but it's far and few between.

FYI, you dont need a watch with a cell plan to have it function as a digital key.

Suggest getting a shielded/faraday pouch for your keys. They are cheap on Amazon

...... I would try putting all things that can possibly open the car in the microwave and then try opening it.

And I would also try it parked down the road to see if it opens there.

If it still opens I would check all the idrive settings and also double check there is not anything inside the car that could cause the issue.

If that all fails, it would be off to the dealer.
