Both shoulder wear

Hi guys,
Another post on here, I’ve finally managed to book my car in to check the alignment with a Indy however I still can’t get my head round how my new tyres have developed double shoulder wear (inner and outer) ( see pics for reference) My tyres aren’t under inflated (36psi) so I’m confused on how it’s showing the symptoms that it is, the wear only occurs in passenger side and not the drivers. Any one ever experience this before and give me some help on what I should look for/ do. I’ve seen about “ tyre rotation” online but these are new tyres only been on 2 weeks .TIA. Name:  IMG_7436.jpg

Can't see any signs of wear in those pics. Can you point it out or explain what you're seeing in a bit more detail?

Its due to them being new tyres so the wear is not 100% obvious but starting to show, if you look on the outer edges you can see the black wear marks ( for example you can see the grey road marks/ dirt in the centre but on the outer edges the wear is faster causing them to black... first image helps you see it better but this is happening on both shoulders) , photos aren't the best, but best i could do to show the initial wear

Inside edge wear from an alignment problem, outside edge wear from flying around corners?

Both could be from flying around corners if you tend to corner both directions (typically freeway ramps are always the same direction but maybe enough round-abouts can build up cornering wear the opposite direction).

It’s likely caused by improper toe setting on one side of the car. People think camber quickly destroys tires but that’s not true. Improper toe settings can destroy a tire in as little as 2-3k miles. Also, the feathering you’re getting on one side is toe related. Get an alignment from a reputable BMW Indy shop.

Do get the alignment checked. But I still can't see the difference

Please report back what the shop found, so we can all better understand what was going on. I do see what you are referring to, the smooth black area at the outer 1" of outside and inside tread blocks.

Also, do you have any suspension mods, like aftermarket springs.

Have no mods suspension wise, alll stock, I’m booked in for Friday so will report back then.

This is an M140i? I have a '22 540i, as well as a bunch of other BMWs, and I don't think any of them specify the same pressures front and rear. I typically set my pressures at whatever the placard says inside the driver's door. For my G30, that is 33 front, 38 rear (PSI here in the colonies).

Yeh didn’t make it very clear in my description, apologies, I run the same psi as you however I upped the fronts to 36 psi to see if this “wear” would stop but it has carried on.

What is your driving style? Wear this far up the sidewall can only be from driving really hard, e.g. at track, or severe under inflation. Or both.

Most of the time I’m just commuting the car daily, on weekends or some nights I maybe go on spirited drives but wouldn’t say it’s pushed super hard all the time, the psi is 36 on the front would say that’s more than enough rather then under inflated which I can’t get my head round, unless a control arm bushing has been perished and is moving at certain speeds causing uneven wear ?

IMO, the black bit just isn't in contact with the road, and stays clean. The grey has picked up grit/dust from the road.

Just strange that the other side isn’t doing the same, while both are sat at the same psi, I’ll attach photos for reference

Not sure, tbh. I can see what you're saying though.

What's the spec pressure range for the front axle? I know for mine 36psi is the minimum. Maybe try pumping it up to the max spec to see if that changes anything?

Minimum is “32” and max loaded is “41”
Just confusing how it’s signs of under inflated, ill pump them up to the higher end and see if there’s any change, it’s off into the shop on Friday for them to check the alignment.

Swap your tires left to right and see if the problem follows. If it does it might be an issue with the tire itself, not the car.

So guys, took my car today and got it sorted all it needed was a alignment I’ll insert pic here- Still baffles me how bmw try charging me £1212 when all it need was a alignment
