A warning to people with plug in hybrids, I have gone to put my car in my garage, walked outside, blipped the car and reversed the car into the garage.

What I didn’t know is that as soon as I’ve blipped the car, from the drivers side and turned it on, the charging flap has pinged open.. not knowing this is the case I’ve proceeded to reverse the car into the garage and caught the flap on the garage wall opening, the cover where the M badge is has dropped off the flap hinge and damaged the paint on the floor.

I have checked my CCTV and you can clearly see that the flap was closed when I enter my drive way, i go inside and come back outside when Mrs comes home, I then unlock the car, get in and turn it on then the flap pings open, obviously I am in the car and cannot see this.

Annoyed to say the least.

How do you put videos on here?

Sorry to hear this, hope it’s not too much to get fixed.
To post a video you would need to put it on YouTube the link from there. There may be other hosting sites that you could use.

Thanks, here’s the video. It’s bizarre why it’s done what it’s done.

That’s not good. I would get in touch with the dealer and see if you can get them to sort the damage for you.

I don’t really know how to go about it to be honest, the video says it all but I doubt the dealer (Sandal Wakefield) will be bothered about it.

There is an obvious fault which the video shows, it’s not like you can hit a button in the car to open it by mistake or there is a warning comes up to say it’s open. I would go and see your sales person and show them the video and see what they have to say. If no joy there try BMW Customer Services. As they say if you don’t try you don’t get.

I agree, I’ve just sent an email to my supplying dealer explaining what’s happened and provided the video too.

I’m not expecting anything but we’ll see what they come back with.

I think I’ve as much chance of them diagnosing the problem as I have of winning the lottery.

I’m sure they will fob me off saying it’s my fault it’s opened and it’s my fault I couldn’t see that it’s opened whilst reversing into my garage.

I’ve also noticed this morning that i’ve chipped the paint on the wing where the flap has bent back just before the cover eventually dropped off onto the floor.

As I say, I’ve emailed them so I expect to get a return email today from them saying something along the lines of ‘thanks, but no thanks..’.

There’s a few electrical gremlins arising with this car.

1) Keyless entry unlocks all doors apart of the rear passenger side door.

2) Lock the car but the door mirrors fold intermittently, sometimes they fold, sometimes they don’t.

3) Electric tailgate foot action works 1 out of 100, actually the only time it’s worked is when the BMW fella showed me on collection day, I’ve been like Michael Flatley dancing away behind the car trying to open the bloody thing before, never works.

4) Electric charging flap mysteriously pops open.

Shouldn't the car also give a warning when the flap is open ? I will try this next time I drive. At lease when you try to drive with the charging cable attached, the car refuses to move ...

Also for an English car it's less obvious to notice this happening since you sit on the opposite side of the flap ...

Thanks for this post - I will keep it in my shortlist ...

I never ever experienced any of your issues above on my 30e. I had 11/23 and 03/24 software versions.

That’s strange.

Do you not get a warning message on the main screen that the flap is open? I’ve forgotten to close mine a couple of times after unplugging and a full screen warning message comes up to say that it is open as soon as I move off. If you’re not getting this message it might suggest the lock mechanism/sensor has failed which the dealer should be able to identify.

No idea what software version mine is, don’t get me wrong i love the car.

These are niggles, but the flap issue and subsequent damage to it really wracked me off last night.

You’re correct about the car not moving when it’s plugged in etc, I’d already charged it at the office, at home my charging point is in the garage on the same side as the electrical flap on the car so I reverse the car in.

No warning sign at all, like I say and as you can see I had no idea that it had popped open.

You can see from the video it pops open with some force, ie from a solenoid or whatever the term is, the flap was definitely closed, again you can see from the video it’s closed.

Paranoid now that it’s going to open again when reversing into my garage.

Can you do me a favour if you don’t mind, please can you photograph the warning you get? I’m 99.9% I don’t get a warning but I will double check. If I’m supposed to see one but don’t I’m going all out for my dealer to rectify this for me.

Have you ever installed any over the air software updates ? The latest version available for our cars is 03/2024.77.

You should be able to check the version in your iDrive.

Do you use the myBMW iOS or Android app? It should tell you if there is an update.

Since the November version I had initially, there have been quite a few bug fixes relevant to my car…

So your car is quite new and already on the March version, although not the latest (which should not be relevant). So never mind… forget my remark 😉

No, I haven’t done that before but when I check the version via the app it tells me there is no update available.

It’s was delivered to me in April.

The app tells me there’s newer update available but are you saying there is one?

Thanks for you help.
