Rock chip in windshield
Hey all,
been a minute, but wanted to know if anyone else has dealt with a rock chip in the windshield? heard it the other day, was real loud but didn't really see it, until yesterday on the way home. Can I use one of those fix it kits? I know the glass is supposedly "special" because of the HUD and unfortunately for me, my front windshield is also tinted, so I would really really hate to have to swap it out, and repay for all of that. especially with so little time on the car so far. I cleaned it off with alcohol and glass cleaner when i got home, and hit it with some gorilla glue drops to fill the actual chips. they're as small as a pin head, but I know coming into east coast winter, it will grow if i don't do something about it now. any advice would help! |

Most insurance companies have a Zero deductible to fix chips in windows. I also changed my policy years ago & pay a very small premium to have zero deductible to replace windshield.
It makes even more sense in today’s high technology vehicles. |

The reason? She had three windshield rock chip repairs with 2 and half years.(25 month, to be exact) All three incidents were documented as not her fault, since she had the dashcam videos. GEICO paid for all three repairs. Each time was no more than $100 to $150. She should have paid it herself without notifying GEICO. Apparently GEICO decided that 3 windshield chip repairs equaled higher risk.(again, she had no other claims for over 20 years and her driving record was spotless, which was not easy for a 30-something woman living in the Northeast) I guess it's like how some auto insurance companies offer cheap roadside assistance plans, but treat each flat tire or key lock-out as a real claim(like an actual accident)... and use that against the policy holders. |

I was with GEICO for over 35 years and NEVER filed a claim. My PARKED car was hit. GEICO shorted me $650 because they said the body shop I choose had a labor rate that exceeded their parameters. I went to the top and they would not budge. At the time I was paying them almost $3,000 per year for my two vehicles. I said for $650 you are willing to loose me as a customer? Their answer was yes and i said GOOD BYE GEICO. As the owner of my body shop said "Dont use a company that has endless advertising on TV because you will be paying for it" |

I live in the mountains and rock hits happen all the time up here. I've had about 5 in the past 2 years. The rain-x kit is f fantastic. As long as the hit isn't too close to the window frame. I've done a dozen b between 2 cars and a front facing camera lens. never had one fail.
You need the kit, a place out of any sunlight to work. Preferably a heated garage. A UV light on Amazon will cure the sealant. About 20 bucks. Make sure you get the right wavelength. I forget which one works. Sadly, you may have made it impossible with the crazy glue. The way the uv glue works is that it has plenty of time to penetrate the entire crack, before you set it with sunlight or a lamp. The crazy glue sets too fast and probably will stop the uv glue from working it's way into the crack properly. |

Unfortunately, they don't always treat the "victims" very well.(those whose cars were damaged by their policyholders who are at fault) That's according to the two bodyshops that I have dealt with over the last 25 years.(one owned by a Mercedes dealership and the other one owned by an auto group that owns multiple dealerships, including Lexus, Audi and Porsche) |

so w my 2021 I had a small crack due to a rock 8 months into getting my car... it was towards the bottom of the windshield and on the passenger side so not in my line of vision at all. I had bought the resin windshield repair kit that costs $8 and did the repair like 4 months later (oops didn't do it right away) and it made the crack a little less noticeable but it never grew. |

Safelite guy told me that luckily, the chip is just surface and no repair is needed. However, if its bothering my line of sight, then the only option is to replace the windshield, he can only repair large cracks and chips. |
