M1 confirmed; Photos inside.

If the reports are true, the M1 will be headed to production. But it's not exactly the car you guys think it'll be. The new M1 will be an homage to the classic M1 produced from 1978 to 1981.

BMW resurrected the spirit of its M1 with the recent unveiling of the M1 Hommage concept, and it looks as though the Bavarian supercar is once again headed to production, a new report finds. A time frame for the reborn M1 has yet to be announced, but a few other details have been revealed.

In an interview with Car magazine, BMW board member Herbert Diess revealed that the M1 Hommage concept will indeed make production. "We have the know-how, we have the right engine, we even have the infrastructure to build such a car," he said.
Despite Diess spilling the beans to Car, the British magazine is saving the goods for its July 2008 issue. However, Car's online site did reveal a little bit about the upcoming model.

Although the M1 Hommage concept has a strong connection to the M1 BMW produced between 1978 and 1981, the road-going version of the concept will not wear the M1 nameplate. A mid-engine setup will be part of the equation but, unlike the original, three engine choices will be available — presumably of the six, eight and ten-cylinder variety.

The production car will also sport ‘heron-wing’ doors and a driver-focused interior.

The July issue should hit newsstands in the U.S. later this week.
Some folks are predicting that the road name of this vehicle will be the M10.

BMW need something to fight the Audi R8, which IMHO, looks WAY better than the M1 Hommage Concept...

wonder which engine will go into the M1. the new M3's V8 or the crazy V10 in M5/M6?

It looks like this new M1 will utilize the N54, M3, and M5/6 engines.

Edit- And I agree; the R8 is an absolutely beautiful automobile. I haven't seen a production car as stunning as the R8 since the NSX.

Not to be an ass, but that article was written on May 27, and posted a bunch of times already. The M1 is not a 1-series, so it's also posted in the wrong section of this forum.

EDIT: It's been moved.

IMHO...

Beefed up N54, with increased turbo boost and w/e else, pushing 400+ HP, wrapped up in a ~2500lb car for $60-80k = WIN for BMW.
