Is this rust or oxidation?

Do I need to remove this rust before using drcolorchip?

I tried ironx but it didn't really do anything.

Want to know if it's okay to paint over the chip or somehow remove the rust or whatever this is.

Looks like you took pics with a phone camera - focus is anywhere but at the right place. So it's a little hard to tell.

I do see two (2) area of concern:
1). Paint chip edges are jagged and in some place raised. You really will want to sand-away all raised edges and areas of the old paint that are no longer firmly adhering to the primer.
2). Top picture shows a deeper cut that very likely goes through the primer. Sand that area as well until you get to the shiny metal.

It may not be rust, but you want to sand (400->800->1500) the area to get uniform and even level onto which you will be applying touch-up paint. Even if you are looking at primer, you want it to be fresh and not overly oxidized, else touch-up paint will not adhere well.

Also, if you neglect to start with an even working chip surface, sanding it level with the remaining paint plane after you fill it in will be that much trickier.

Okay good to know thanks for the information. Think I might just lightly sand it to start.

Those are tiny chips that are zoomed in very close on a macro shot. In my opinion, sanding the edges of those tiny chips will be tough to do in such a small area without making a bigger mess. If it were my car, I would dab touch up paint in there and move on. You take 400 grit to that with your finger and you are going to turn a rock chip into a dime size patch that will be hard to deal with for the average person.

Good stuff. Yeah I think I'll just fill the chips in and move on.

Yes the pic was macro. I'll likely take more pics (before and after) non zoomed in macro ha..

Rust is oxidation, actually, but agreed it's likely not either. Also agreed to dab the repair and not sand to a larger area. Best case the repair works. Worst case it doesn't and then you sand to the larger area (which will indeed be far harder to make look right, if ever).

Hi, I don't know if there's a more relevant section, but if so, I can't find it. My car was imported from Germany, where they use salt to remove snow, so some parts have some rust. I've seen some rust-removing paints out there. Has anyone tried it? Thanks.

Definitely don't sand. If you're worried you can dab a little rust inhibitor in the affected areas with a fine brush before you apply touch up paint.

Thanks all for the tips and feedback. Think I will pass on sanding and just use the drcolorchip kit and move on.

I'll post a full review of the process in the coming weeks.
