I just picked up my car from the dealer after a repair. I had an issue with the touchscreen (it wasn't working periodically). They initially replaced the screen, but that didn't solve the problem, so the dealer ended up replacing the head unit.

While quickly checking how everything worked after the repair, I noticed the updated firmware version 11/2025.24 (iDrive 9). In this version, developers have added the option to disable the Auto Start/Stop function using a dedicated physical button 'Drive Settings menu' on the center console.

Now you simply need to hold the physical button button down for a few seconds. There are no longer any additional steps or taps on the screen required. The message that appears there is purely for information about the current mode and does not require you to press anything.

This sounds like an amazing update, not sure my why there's no activity on this post. Still waiting for this update.

I'm not holding out hope that this came to I Drive 8....

This will be one update I will look foward to downloading.

markronnie's user avatarmarkronnie Hi, my post is specifically about the new option to switch the ASS (Automatic Start-Stop) system on and off using a physical button.

Previously, this was only possible through the on-screen menu.

I’m puzzled by your post because if 2 things
1. Auto hold has absolutely nothing to do with the stop/start ASS engine functionality. It enables the brakes to engage at a stop while the peddle is not pressed & disengage when you drive off.

2. There has always been several ways to deactivate the ASS function “temporarily” until the vehical is restarted.

So maybe the 11/2025 ID9 update just enables an additional way to temporarily disengage the ASS function.
That’s how I read it, as you say nothing to do with auto hold !
Perhaps your vehicle is different?

Thanks for clarifying. But do you know you always had been able to use the button on console with 3 lines to bring up screen to deactivate ASS temporarily? That’s 1 of several ways to accomplish disengaging the crappy ASS in the new generation x1 & 2’s
Yes, but previously it always required interaction with the touchscreen menu, and now, to enable or disable ASS, you simply need to hold the button down for a few seconds. There are no longer any additional steps or taps on the screen required. The message that appears there is purely for information about the current mode and does not require you to press anything.

Glad to see they are acquiescing (to a degree) here.. but I'm still very satisfied with my decision to disable ASS permanently.

I was on a major expressway with my blinker on and the light was turning red so i had to go. I had tunes on so i couldnt hear that the engine was off and when i hit the gas to turn the car would start back up and almost caused an accident. It took about 4 full seconds to start back up. I cannot believe that it doesnt automatically disengage when your blinker is on? Unreal! I hate this start stop nonsense.

I look forward to trying it out when the 11/2025 OTA update comes out in the NE USA. Or better yet when I take mine in to the 2 Year service in December, I will ask them to install it.

UPDATE: took my x1 to service fir 2nd year ultimate care maintenance but they did NOT update to latest ID9. Told they dint get reimbursed by BMW unless update is required to resolve an issue.
Hoping update comes OTA soon as I’m looking forward to the EZ method of deactivating the ASS, even if it’s only per drive.

I can't believe this is not a thing. My 2018 jeep does this... a 7 year old car that's pretty much the complete opposite of BMW luxury does this....

I imagine the minimalist aspects of the interior design has much to do with not having a single button to deactivate the ASS function. What makes it a BIGGER deal on the U11 & U10, is the the ASS in the ICE engine is the crappiest BMW has put out in recent years. I’ve driven the latest gen X3 with mild hybrid & it was far better. If I drove that vehicle I would keep the ASS engaged all the time as it work flawlessly.

100. If I were limited to only one mod, it would be our module to disable it permanently.

Is this iDrive 8 or 9?

iDrive 9

I think this is great, or an improvement at least. So I take it that a quick press of that button will bring up the "usual" things it has in the past, but a "hold" of the button then turns off the ASS for the duration of that particular drive.

Its not quite as good as the dedicated one touch button from my last 330, but it does save one extra step, which is nice.

"Press and Hold" for a moment seems better than "swipe and press," even if minimally.

Is the shortcut for the ASS still there?

Does anyone know if it's also available for iDrive 8 in the new update?
