My car has 12,000 miles on it. When cold, i would get a knocking noise. The noise went away if you pushed in the clutch or when the car was warmed up.

The dealer diagnosed it as a bearing problem inside the transmission. BMW air freighted a new transmission in 2 days. Dealer installed it in 4 hours. BMW and the dealer were fantastic to deal with.

This was the noise:

Most BMWs have some sort of a clunk in the pilot bearing. This is normal. I don't know how loud yours was but if it comes back with the new tranny I wouldn't worry about it.

I started hearing this noise about a year ago. I wasn't too worried because I have a warranty and road size assistance. Did you listen to the video? Does that sound like the pilot bearing? Are you talking about the bearing on the input shaft?

glad to hear bmw changed it without giving you a hard time as it sounds like a tractor in the vid. did you do anything to stress the tranny out or did it just happen?

I own my car as opposed to leasing it, so I baby it. I generally keep my cars for 7 years. I don't valet it and if someone else drives it, I am in the car with them. The only people who have had unfettered access to my car would be the dealer and their staff when I get it serviced. It was in the autobody shop a few times for rock chips.

I got a new transmission too but mine would make a weird hissing whine when i would accelerate. Sounded like a race car but i knew it wasnt normal, they put a new one in under warranty

Probably due to the torque of the twin turbo. How many miles on the car when the tranny was replaced?

Glad to hear that you got things squared away with BMW without any hassle, E92Vancouver. You see a lot of posts regarding shady dealers and poor service, but rarely any good reviews. It's nice to hear about the good dealers out there that still take steps to please the customer.



Slightly off topic, but my local dealer that I go to for service and maintenance work, Schomp BMW, has been nothing short of fantastic, even though I bought my car from a different dealer. The work is performed on time and flawlessly, I always get a loaner if I request it in advance, and if they need to keep my car overnight for any reason, they let me keep my BMW loaner for as long as it takes for them to get my car ready.

The service has actually been so good that I'll likely buy my next BMW from them even if they can't give me the absolute lowest price. For all the extra steps they take to please the customer, they've definitely earned my business.

You are damn right. The noise is coming back. Why would the pilot bearing do this?

I am by no means an expect when the clutch is depressed the bearing is sort of "loose" the best I can describe. So because of the vibrations in the driveline as your car is running it clunks a little. As you press the clutch pedal the clutch fork pushes the entire assembly and put a load on the bearing so it's more secure and does not clunk. If the clunk does not go away when you press the clutch pedal then it's another issue, otherwise it is you good old BMW tranny, which is most of the time is rock solid (manual).

Around 22,000 miles. I bought the car with 18,000 miles on it so it was definitely not my fault. It should tell you something about preowned cars lol

If there is noise when the pedal is depressed and the car is in neutral and not moving, then the throwout bearing is bad.

If there is noise when the pedal is released and the car is in neutral and not moving it is the input shaft bearing.

If there is noise when the pedal is depressed and the car is in gear and not moving, it is the pilot bearing.
