The Rabbit is Back!
have you had a chance to see the new VW rabbit ad? when i first saw it i thought it was a commercial for the MINI. it was kind of cool and definitely refreshing after all those idiotic Passat "low ego emissions" ads.
i'm kind of shocked by the price though. $14,990 as a starting point (which means you'll never get it for that price) is kind of high for something that is supposed to be a bare-bones car.

I liked it. VW's new ad agency is pretty good at what they do.. at least they've captured my attention. They did the BK King commercials and other pretty innovative campaigns.

Price is higher because it will be in demand the way gas prices are going, total cost of ownership won't be as high as some others. I've seen man Toyota Prius Hybrids, in a traditionally big "truck" city like Houston.

another thing to mention is that its 2.5L engine only produces 150hp with 9.5:1 compression ratio. i don't know if it was intended but it seems to me as though as there is a LOT of room for mods and engine tweaks...

Hey, I like VW! When I test drove the 2006 Jetta GLI prior to buying my BMW, it put a huge grin on my face. And the engine and interior were terrific for the price.

reliability? A friend of mine bought a new jetta just about the time I bought my car. She recently rearended someone right in front of her at less than 10mph (from not paying attention at a light)... Repair bill ended up being over 6g's!!!! She is now looking at selling the car... |

As for reliability, I have a 2000 Golf and a 2003 Passat. They have never let anyone in the family sit, the non-scheduled mtc issues have been minor and the cars are a joy to drive--though I do long for the European suspension on the Passat. I would buy another VW in a heartbeat, especially since they seem to be going back to their roots. |

I know what you are saying about reliability. VW has a terrible reputation for reliability. But FWIW, back in the day, I owned a 1994 Jetta GLI and had no problems in 4 years of ownership. And my dad has a 2000 Jetta VR6 that has nearly 100K miles and has had no problems to this day. It still looks great and is very fun to drive.
Before I bought my 330i, I tested the new GLI among others and really enjoyed it. The turbo kicks in so quick that it would make a terrific commuting car. But VW's reliability reputation scared me off despite my own good experience with VW. If I bought a lemon, I'd never forgive myself.

I think that the coil pack problems really messed up VW’s reliability stats. It affected a lot of cars, many taking several trips to the dealer with CELs and rough running engines. But in the end I would prefer a problem like that, with several trips to the dealer, over my two neighbors with failed Honda transmissions.
It also appears to me that the German companies are much quicker to do recalls than Honda or Toyota, which would also skew the statistics. But that is just my impression from watching my neighbors deal with their Consumer Reports endorsed cars. To each his own, and it really is hard to buy a bad car these days. But for those of you out there who have a low opinion of VW, all I can suggest is to go drive one. Preferably a GTI |
