Reasons to hate HOA
Why do you hate your HOA? I'll start:
They complain about my curtains not being white but don't enforce rules about people parking friggin big ass commercial trucks in front of thier houses for weeks on end or driving like jackoffs.....

Ive gone to only one of my HOA meetings. I showed up after happy hour.
In response to the arguments over political signs for well over say 15 minutes, I said, "This is dumb, the election will be over in a week." At the end of the meeting where they talked about election of officers, I said, "I nominate my wife for something. She needs something to do." And then I just started laughing out loud. My advice is to go drinking, then go a meeting, and then make fun of it. You will feel better. |

I lived in a HOA community in a Seattle suburb and I don't know a single family who didn't get heckled over something. Our were that we were painting the trim on our house without preapproval of the color (it was a fairly dark green in WA, not exactly out of place or anythng odd) and that we put in a permanent basketball hoop in the driveway. It was my parents house and when some lady came by to inform us of our trim violation he offered to let them repaint the house any color they both agreed on (at the ass. expense) they never said another word. About the basketball hoop he said he could remove the top half and it became a decorative planter. They left us alone there too.

Meh, I've seen what happens in area's with NO HOA, Even Nice neighborhoods go to hell fast cause self important assholes don't know how to act.
Might as well be int he Ghetto the way I've seen some of these privileged idiots act. SO, I call em' a neccessary evil. There's one crazy bitch on the HOA that told me to scrub the leaf prints on my driveway off.... This is Seattle, it happens all year, it's wet... I told her to go get a scrub brush and "We can bang it out." She never did come back... But yeah, without the HOA you have scumbags parking cars in the lawn, Painting their houses in ghetto fabulous colors, it's pretty bad. There's not much common sense or courtesy left in the world and the HOA is the result of this.

Okay, it has been a LONG time since I have lived back in the states, so sorry that I sound ignorant on this one.
What legal right does an HOA have? Do they seriously have "curtain color" regulations? That is frickin ridiculous! |

They can fine you, have you foreclosed on, etc. I saw the one of the HOA bitches today and wanted to run her down so bad! I told them to suck it on my curtains. I will fight them in court if I have to cause that is retarded.

This HOA is decent, but at the last place we lived at...some guy tried to do a quick oil change and got hit with $100 fine. So he saved $30 on an oil change, but gotta spend $100 to pay the fine, lol.

Alot of HOAs dont have much teeth to them. When I bought my house a couple of years ago there was a fence around the side yard.
So here's the conversation I had with the president of HOA: HOA: We never could get the previous owner to take down that fence (height restriction) Me: What can you do? HOA: We can issue a fine. Me: How much? HOA: Its alot. Me: How much is alot? HOA: We can fine you $250/ year. Me: *LOL* The fence is staying put. Its cheaper than me replacing it. HOA: ... And no they cant foreclose. Any lien for some dumb fine slapped on by a HOA would be fully subordinate to any first. They would get their money when you sold the house though. It would probably cost them more money to get a lawyer to do that in the first place in any case. Mine is run by a collection of old farts who think its their entre in to politics or something. Its pathetic. The meeting got "called to order" and motions were "seconded." There were "objections" to raising the monthly HOA fee by $25. Trust me, go up in there half wasted and have a good time with it. You'll laugh your ass off. |

And as far as the forclosure stuff goes, I don't know if they can get it done or no but they threaten people with it saying they can have you forced out. I don't know how that stuff works. My parents live in a really nice neighborhood with no HOA and it's great there and nobody's house looks bad at all. Seems like here in Phoenix though, you have to live where there's an HOA. Oh and it's $125/mo here. $500-$700 is friggin crazy!

I live in a non-HOA neighborhood and everything is fine. No trashed cars or obnoxious colors (at least in the immediate area). When I was looking for a house back in 2005 the first thing I specified was NO HOA.
$125 a month to be under a bunch of tin-pot neighborhood fascists? Fuck that. |

I think mine is $50/year. It's a joke. They have an architectural subcommittee to approve just about anything. I'm going to widen my driveway, to a width similar to most of my neighbors, and they want me to submit engineered drawings with stamp for HOA approval. The city doesn't even require that for a drive. I laughed.
It's a pretty nice neighborhood, the HOA does help a little. The rules say no cars on the street at night, no boats or RV's in the driveway, etc.

HOA's can be beneficial, but they can also be a bunch of cowards with power.
My dad is about to start an HOA in his new neighborhood because of his dickhead of a neighbor. It's a new neighborhood in a small town. All lots are ~1.5+ acres. His neighbor wanted to build some 2500sqft aluminum workshop in his backyard. The developer still has say in what goes and he told the guy he couldn't build it. So he went around to get a petition signed. Everyone said No. My dad told him, "No, because it's going to bring to the value of my property and I don't want to look at that ugly monstrosity every day." Now the guy keeps his old beater and stacks upon stacks of tires in his driveway. Not to mention his messy yard. From what other neighbors have said, he also drives extremely fast down all of the streets where a lot of kids play. In this case an HOA is mandatory. |
