Handbrake query
I have noticed on my E91 that when I am parking and put the handbrake on for the first time, it must move through arond 7-8 clicks......
If i immediately release it and do it again it catches in about 3 This happens every time.....anyone else have this or know what it might be? I had though the auto adjustment gubbins may be on the way out JJ |

Mine (E91 320D May 07) does the same. only started about six months ago.
It's got 32K on it now. I've noticed that it seems to grab one side (nearside) more than the other also. Joy! |

Sounds like the handbrake shoes are on there way out, very easy job to do to change them.
Wheel off>caliper off>disc off> remove shoe and replace with new one and put everything back |

my handbrake is f*cking shite.
It already failed once and rolled into my garage door. Even after getting replaced I still have to take steroids to be able to lock it. I can click 8 clicks and it still rolls on a steep incline. I only have 11k miles and its always been like this. I always leave it in gear wherever I go now.

I think it's disguisting your dealer can't sort something as simple as a bloody handbrake - they have enough computing power to put man on the moon, but can't stop your car from rolling down the street? Watch out soon for the new option on all E9X's - the HDA (or Hill Descent Arrest) system, which consists of a pair of house bricks to tuck under your wheels to act as chocks, conveniently located in the boot space for ease of access - Only £695 when purchased in conjunction with CAFD (Creaky-As- F*ck-Dampers) @ £495.

Mine too. Mostly on 6-8 clicks but sometimes on 3 or so.
Also, anyone notice how the car rolls back an inch or so before stopping. Is this due to the prop / rear dif slack or something else. Was unerving at 1st.

My mate doubled checked mine, the drivers side one was pretty much falling apart and the passenger side one was not wound up properly, as soon as they where changed (with new springs), I have a super tight handbrake now. |

I mean, i gave the car a wash and it didnt fix it. I then had tea and that didnt fix it. I was tofckintally stumped after that If possible, my car will never be at a stealers. I have seen the efforts of 2 of our 3 NI main stealers on my wifes Mini and it was DIABOLICAL. Why on earth would I pay these obvious tards 100 quid an hour to do something that I, a human with a fair bit of technical ability as well as care and pride in my work, could do myself. Its not rocket science and i dont have the priveledge of a warranty nor a wallet fatter than Moyles. I was kinda hoping that some people here had been hands on with the handbrake adjustment......perhaps not. I am quite sure that alot of people here even think that the disc and caliper is the handbrake on these cars and are not aware that contained inside the hub of the disc, is an ickle pair of shoes........Vauxhall Calibra style leaving the visual disc doing nothing at standstill. I see that you can adjust the inner shoes without even taking the disc off but i was just wondering about the pro's and cons of this. Back in my garage days, we used to take the drums off to remove the ridgethat typically formed around the edge of the drum and adjust them then. Obviously having calipers as well as shoes turns this into a bit of a stripping match really but would be interested to hear others experiences using either or both techniques...... And watching some sweaty clam do it at a main dealer does not count you lazy rich fackers JJ |

You can adjust the drum brakes without removing the drum, just like in the old days. You need to remove the rear wheel and rotate the hub until you can get a small screwdriver on the rachet at the 10o'clock position. You can then wind in some adjustment.
