Another Beta Review: JB3 1.3 8A5

Did the Beta 1.3 8A5 install last night using the chip burner (really easy to do). After swapping out the chip and starting the car, the fan came on and stayed on for quite a bit (was hella loud), which was a first for the car. The car was cold btw. Went out and did about 3-4 WOT pulls and the fan behavior went away which was good. Here's my findings:

Stock map
I started out with this so I can get a re-feel of what the stock throttle and power response was since I've been running JB3 1.22 for so long. I mashed the gas and the car basically said "Bitch, please!". And I pulled over right there and swapped to Map4.

Map4
Noticed the immediate smooth transition of the application of throttle going from 1200rpm cruise thru to 4k rpm. Difficult to articulate, but it was noticeably different from 1.22 with the feeling that the engine was pulling the car through a a WOT run whereas 1.3 feels as if the engine/chassis respond as a unit.

Map6
Oh how I luv thee Map6 - The aggressiveness of this map is easily discernible from a hard launch. Neck-snapping good to start with a strong lasting push through the top end. The pull when at 100% throttle feels extremely strong - but it isn't as much as a smash mouth event at 3-4k rpm getting there (I do miss that tho). The dynolicious 1/4 mile times are still on par from 1.22.

The two maps do not have lagfix yet as the feature will be added shortly to the beta maps and there is a noticeable distinction between 1.22 and 1.3 with the lag between the footpress -> engine response. It is small mind you, but there nonetheless.

I can't compare traction issues (I don't have such problems ), but the lower rpm throttle application of the high maps would probably be hell for you RWD pansies.

Long story short: Smooth like BillyDee Williams but still with Strong Kung-Fu

* As a side note for my post here vs. n54tech - I was a big naysayer about all the PROcede V3 butt-dynos with words like 'smooth' 'silky' 'velvety' 'freewheelin rpm' and the like. I may have to eat some crow with UncleShiv since yes, you can actually feel it and yes it is a pretty good enhancement. This is not me equating one tunes 'silkyness' to another, just saying I was wrong to discount it.

That was always my concern with this release. The actual performance numbers for me on my test runs haven't changed.. I'm still in the 12.89-12.92 ET range but the sense or feel of how you get there is different.

I'll be glad if Terry puts both maps with the old 1.22 feel in addition to the 1.3 enhanced ones that way you get the ultimate choice.

First mention of Vishnu in this thread came in post 1. Second mention came in post 3. Almost sounds like someone's itching to have the thread co-opted.

Of course I could be wrong, but why even bring it up?

So you had the fan comes on at startup surprise too.

I thought I was the only one....but mine was on 1.22 not 1.3.

Scared the hell out of me, but cleared itself on a restart.

If you have a BT scanner, you might want to check for some sort of coolant sensor code. I had such a code and think it might have had something to do with that fan!

Continue testing and if you feel like something is not right, give Terry a shout, its BETA so it can be fixed and polished on.

You guys who? I'm not Shiv. If you want to compliment him go ahead. If you want to question his preference in women, go ahead. I was responding to post 3.

I had commented on this kind of "placebo" powerband before. It may not help you in all out performance numbers at all. However, if it feels much more powerful in everyday driving down low, people get the impression that a car is much faster. Terry had said a long time ago he wasn't that concerned with it, but would give people what the wanted. I do see the possiblity of lower rpm roll on superiority, and passing without having to shift down, etc, etc. So I guess that can equate to some real world advantages. For me that is fine, as long as it doesn't hurt MPG, etc. One disadvantage is without proper traction, the car is even harder to launch than a low torque map. I think you will go through tires faster with these new maps. And when your car is cold, you really need to take it easy because with even small throttle applications your boost pressures are much higher than stock.

Is the "lag fix" only important if you are 29.2 or have one of the progmans that induce lag?

In other words, if you are pre 29.2 you don't really need the lag fix feature.

I am pre 29.2, have never ran lagfix, but i feel almost ZERO need for it. I am on JB3 1.1v and the car is very responsive down low, it feels perfect.
