Brainstorming Session
Gentlemen,
I have recently installed my rear fogs. They are no where near as bright as I would have liked, however, I am very happy with the upgrade nonetheless. How can we upgrade the bulbs to be much brighter (for several purposes, including flashing tailgaters, reversing with tints easily, dense fog)? Please post ideas. I will be working on some things this weekend including high powered LED's. By the way, I am an electrical engineer. Kind Regards, KJ |

I'm assuming you noticed this being an engineer, but I'll point out for others: I have noticed it depends on viewing angle because of the lens. Therefore if you are standing behind vehicle, they don't appear "plenty bright", but if you kneel down at the level of another driver, they certainly are bright to me.

especially for tailgaters. last thing i would want is an unsafe driver behind me that has been temporarily blinded by my obscenely bright rear fogs. you could always just be the bigger person and move over for faster moving traffic. |

+1 on the lens directing the light where it's intended to go. If you need it brighter, you're already an electrical engineer. I don't know why you'd as the forum full of artards.
May I ask why you want it brighter? |

No one wants a driver with ultra-bright rear fogs on the road. You're a nuisance and a hazard.

adorable comments...i'm going to be working on it this weekend. i already gave reasons for why: it's hard to see when i reverse with tints (i'm sure i'm not the only one), tailgaters (i said nothing about the highway, i never chill on the passing lane), and dense fog (im in a high elevation).
i've seen them from a distance and yet again, they're bright, but i think they should be brighter. temporary usage so shorter lifetime shouldn't be a main concern. funny thing is, if i worded the qs differently or if someone like long asked it, it'd be a diff story. thanks for the help anywhoooooooooo |

LED actually makes it less bright because the combination of the relfector housing and lens is designed to work with a light bulb that emits light more or less evenly in all directions, and reflects/focuses it towards the rear of the car. An LED or LED assembly does not emit light in the same pattern as a light bulb and therefore is far less effective when installed such housing. If you want maximum effect with LED you need a housing that is designed for the light pattern of that particular LED or LED assembly.
