M6 vs 911 C2s buying advice

Hi All,

I know a few of you have done this already which is why im asking really.

I am planning on selling my Beloved E92 335i nowish and have a buyer already.

I'm stuck between these 2 cars the current M6 on an 06 plate with <18k miles on it or the same 06 plate 911 c2s. I like a stronger resale value and only planning on keeping it for about <1.5 years. which is why im tempted to go for the much less powerfull porsche.

I cruise around a mates E60 M5 and am in love with the sound of that Engine.

What are running costs like on the M6: brake fluid, pads all round, Tyres and oil change

and the same with the porsche.

Motor bike comming soon too

Zaine

since i had a service update my MPG has improved no end from 11 mpg to 13mpg

ive done 8000 miles since i bought it and had an oil service whicg cost 350 quid (ish) 2 new rear tyres cost 550 quid and it uses about a litre of oil every 1500 miles.

there is no inspection 1 and 2 come servie time anymore so you never get hit with a really big bill.

so in reality the the mojor cost is fuel

i bet the 997 gets 25mpg it makes a big difference if you are banging on the miles.

get the M6 they are fucking amazing. and i dont think they are going to go down that much in value as i think they have reached a level due to relative rarerity.

I would think servicing & depreciation would be similar as both should have had there big hit (Gen 2 Cars hit the older Gen 1 Porsches) You may get a M6 easier with Warranty as Porsche only have 2 years so unless it’s from an OPC might be worth considering the cost of parts.
I think the Gen 1 Cars were considerably slower than an M6 (Especially the Tip-Tronics) but there main advantage like Steve says is you will get mpg figures nearer your 335i (not half like the M6)

If i were to get a porsche it'd be an official pork dealer, but I think the lack of
space for a young family is hard with a porsche. I know the M v10 engines are wallet killers in consumtion, but they sound brutal a std porsche sounds very nice too

The M6 is obviously going to be quicker in a straight line than a C2S so depends what you're after. 2006 plate generation 1 Porkas at OPC's are mid to high forties. If you buy from an OPC you can haggle for a years full Porsche manufacturers warranty as part of the deal and full warranties are available upto and including 9 years old. They need servicing every 2 years or 20k.

I'm getting 22mpg on my daily drive and motorway/long runs I get 24/25mpg. Thrash it ALOT and it drops to around 18mpg but is very easy to recover the mpg back again.

Go and test drive and have FUN.

Tbh Steve, I wasn't expecting those fuel figures but it had it's first service in time for me collecting it. Be interesting to see what the mpg will be like in 2 years time perhaps. But no doubt like your car, you can stay in a high gear and still overtake faster than most folk, maybe that helps the mpg. I'm sure as hell not complaining though - see V power's at 99.9 pence per litre now.

Had to remember Homer's voice then.............only could 'hear' Peter's from Family Guy lol.

But we now know a M6 will pull away from a Porky T rolling.

Go for the M6 Zaine, sooo much quicker.

Two totally different cars Z.

My 996 C2 handled really really well, gave 28mpg(av), 34mpg on a run... and with the PSE sounded lovely... but could do with a few more ponies.

M6 has a monstrous engine, incredible sound track, but is a bit of a big old beastie.

997 has less room in the back than the earlier 996, so you may find the M6 more practical... and you'll collect Nectar/Shell points much quicker

I think that's just dreadful steve ! 1 litre every 1500 ! have you done a compression test !?

And to charge you 350 for changing a filter and some new oil is unbelieveable I'm surprised they got away with that one !

i think the car has 12 litrees of oil at 17 quid a litre plus filter plus an hours labour. So its about right.

if i have to pay 17 quid for oil every1500 miles it simply pales into insignificance as it does 13mpg...

Why not go for a 911 (996) turbo? Or a lovely 993 turbo?

Having said that I rather like the M6, you need to look at what you really want. I think the M6 is only automatic whereas you can get any 911 in a manual. 911 has more heritage but some people don't like a rear engined car so I suggest you try one.

M6 I can imagine to be very refined, new 911 is also lots more refined than it used to be, personally I think it does destract from the character of the car but it is still an utterly fantastic car, lets face it you are going to enjoy whatever you buy as they are both great motorcars.

Go try them

Yes SMG Like a CSL. Same as an M5, and also the same as a E46 M3 with SMG.

Well Zaine, you've heard it from the font of all knowledge now - M6 it is, you've just no other choice. After all there's no fun in twists and turns and it's all conclusive, proven beyond reasonable doubt, drivers etc - straight line is all that counts.

You're a man - you decide.

Helen,

I'd love a porsche, but I have a really young family and frequently go up north
With prams and a weekend bag. A porsche is sexy, but practically i can't take all of em in a porsche i've tried it before .

The M6 can be the family lugger and good weekend car and good daily drive too.

In regards to the twisty bits porsche hands down.

Zaine - you've hit the nail on the head, it's what's best for your needs at this moment in time and not just about one single aspect of a car nor a single minded approach. You buy what's best for you and that's all that matters.

M6 - great soundtrack.

How far up North? We could have a little 'comparison' lol.
