2012 Ferrari 612 successor spy shots

http://www.motorauthority.com/spy-sh...successor.html

This car was already so ugly, hope the new one actually looks good.

It seems like just yesterday that Ferrari's 612 Scaglietti was launched but it's actually been almost five years, which is why it’s not surprising that test-mules for the car’s successor are already running around the streets of Maranello. Designers will be primarily focused on giving it an edgier, more up-to-the-minute look, however, the new look may be joined by a greener powertrain as well.

While this test-mule was previously thought to be for a minor mid-cycle facelift for the 612 Scaglietti, key details such as the extended front-end, bonnet bulge and stacked exhaust pipes suggest this vehicle represents something much more significant than a facelift.

Not much is known about the successor to the 612 as the car’s is expected to make its launch until late 2011, but according to previous reports the car could feature a brand new V12 powerplant. The new engine is tipped to have 40% fewer carbon-dioxide emissions than the current mill, which would fit Ferrari’s internal goal of reducing its emissions and fuel-consumption by that same amount by 2012.

If the report proves true, the Scaglietti successor will have a fuel economy of roughly 19mpg (12.3L/100km) – up from 11.5mpg (20.5L/100km) for the current model. Power isn't expected to grow much, as the 612’s standard 533hp (397kW) output is already generous.

Other rumors include the possibility of Ferrari adding its Insert able 4x4 system as well as a hybrid option.

Agreed. For some reason, the 456 and 612 are hideous, while the 550/575/599 and 360/430 lines were incredibly beautiful.

More stacked exhaust tips... I actually don't think they look too bad, especially since they aren't the final ones and will look better with actual tips at its debut.

I personally like the 456/612. They look far better in person.

I liked the 456 and 612. They were the more subtle, understated Ferrari for the enthusaist that wanted Fearri power and exclusivity, without the in-your-face, neuveau riche aggressiveness of the more commoon Ferraris and Lamborghinis. They were for the less flashy GT lover that didn't want a race car for the street, but more of a high speed tourer.

Well, I mean it's all a subjective matter, but I still think of it as more of a bland design than an understated one.

i think the 599 is the perfect level of classy aggression. it's understated in relative to your typical ferrari, but it's not downright bland and uninteresting.

The 612 in the pic above has ugly wheels.

I like those except for the beige paint and the star wheels. It's your classy Ferrari, not your sporty Ferrari. If I could afford a Ferrari, I would appreciate having this car as an option.

Fair enough.

If I could afford one I'd definitely be looking at other choices though.

If I was choosing an F-car, the only choice in my book would be the Scuderia or the Challenge Stradale. IMO, those are what Ferraris are truly meant to be - race cars for the street (I would order mine with no A/C, no radio, and Lexan, of course )

Although I like the 599 and 612, I don't view the 612 as a true Ferrari. Kinda like how I don't think the Boxter, Cayman, Panamera, or Cayenne are not indeed Porsches. But not to that extreme, since I still view the 612 as actually being an F-car

Wow. Most Ferrari street cars since the early '50s have not been race cars for the street. And a number of them that tried to be race cars, didn't do so well, even some of the more famous ones, like the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. My favorite Ferrari of all time was not a race car, the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. One of Enzo's favorite models, and his choice as a personal car, was the 250 GTE, a rather large, 2+2. Other famous non-race cars were the 400 Superamerica, the 330 GTC, the 365 GTC and 400i. The 456 ands 612 were following that path.

These are all "true Ferraris" built with the blessings of Enzo himself, and under his watchful eye:

The Boxster and Cayman are more true to the original Porsche than any of them. The Boxster was in fact patterned after the original Gmund roadster and the 550 Spyder, and the cayman might as well be a new version of the 904.

I really do not like the new design scheme Ferrari has started. I liked the edgier look - with the new California and 612 they're too bubbly and soft for such a performance machine.

Yeah, the Lusso is not only my favorite Ferrari ever, it's my all time favorite car. Just sublime, regardless of color.

I should clarify - I meant the 612 and such don't match the characteristics I personally tie Ferrari to or define the company as. When I think of Ferrari I think of F1, which isn't furnished with leather and sat-nav. Same with Porsche. I view cars like the GT3/GT3 RS/GT2 as cars that fit the LeMans history I personally tie the brand directly to

That's becasue you're mistaken as to what the characteristics of the brand actually are. You need to open your mind to what the creators of the brands defined the company as. If all you think of Ferrari as is F1, then you really don't know Ferrari at all, especially on the road car side. Same for Porsche. Porsche itself is an engineering company first, and a creator of self branded cars second. And while a case can be made for the Cayenne and Panamera as not fitting in with the car's brand image (though both fit with the company's engineering brand image), the Boxster and Cayman are both very much in the car brand's sports car image, based as they are on the ORIGINAL Porsche car family.

You have the right to your opinion, but that opinion flies in the face of actual fact. It'd be like saying it's your personal opinion the M3 is so fast because of it's big turbos...

Enzo first began building road cars to help pay for his racing career. Back then it was F1 first, road cars second. That's not what it seems today of course.
